Not what I expected
By a customer from Bourne , 24 Sep 2008[Highly rated reviewer]
Unfortunately I hadn`t realised this was a foreign film, this normally doesn`t bother me expect it was quite badly subtitled and it distracted from the film massively. Fell asleep about an hour in and wasn`t ever so bothered that I missed it.- Was this review helpful to you?

(43)Good for about four minutes
By Oldbloke (308 reviews) from Sidmouth , 05 Jul 2012An elderly spinster gives piano lessons to inmates of a women's prison. She takes a former child prodigy convicted of murder under her wing with predictable results. Confusing tale features unsympathetic characters, muddled back stories and an unlikely and inconsistent central relationship. I couldn't have cared less.- Was this review helpful to you?

Caged Heat with a piano...
By JudgeMental (6 reviews) from Kendal , 21 Apr 2012not really ! but it's a great film -I am constantly amazed by people that bother to go online and 'review 'films by awarding them 1star and saying 'switched it off after 10 minutes !' 'foreign rubbish' and 'it was subtitled so I didn't watch it'..(unless it was Lars Von Trier's 'melancholia ' in which case all the above comments are valid..subtitles might have improved that flick..)- Was this review helpful to you?

Das ist wunderbahr!
By a customer , 26 Mar 2012Good German drama with superb leading performances. A drama about women who have been denied by circumstances. In addition, some superb piano playing.- Was this review helpful to you?

A German Roller-coaster with piano accompaniment
By insomniac (88 reviews) from Malvern , 28 Nov 2011This is a violent, explosive film which makes for uncomfortable viewing. It deals with themes such as lesbianism, incest and guilt for the wrongs committed in the nazi era. The main characters, two women of different generations trapped by the past and unable to escape from the situation they find themselves in, are locked in a bitter struggle: will the teacher prevail and be able to persuade/cajole/convince/force her gifted pupil to follow a career in classical music? What makes this admittedly improbable story convincing is the way the two women are made to look unattractive, unglamorous and downright unpleasant - and yet we care about them, such is the power of the performances. The haunting beauty of the piano music (Mozart, Schubert etc) that is played in the course of the film serves to emphasise the ugliness that surrounds it, but also provides a welcome respite for the audience. This film may not please everyone, but it is definitely different.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great German Film
By Gregor (23 reviews) from Glasgow , 20 Jul 2011Great German Film
This is a very fine made film with great acting from the central characters and catches a theme which is rarely met in world cinema. This film should be more widely available. Highly recommended.....- Was this review helpful to you?
