Excellent detective series in a fascinating setting

Michael Kitchen plays Detective Chief Superintendent Christopher Foyle in the south-coast town of Hastings in May 1940. Foyle is stuck investigating murders when he would rather be more active in the war against Germany.

In The German Woman, we are introduced to Foyle, his driver Sam (Honeysuckle Weeks), and Detective Sergeant Milner (Anthony Howell). Foyle investigates the killing of a German woman, a case which brings out the fierce anti-German sentiment of the British people as German troops march across mainland Europe.

In The White Feather, as a German invasion of England is expected any day, and the boats on the south coast withdraw the Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk, Foyle investigates a girl's act of sabotage and the suspicious death of a hotel keeper during the visit to the hotel of a pro-Hitler and violently anti-semitic group known as the Friday Club.

Filmed in London and the South Coast, the acting, sets and plots are all excellent: adding the historic elements of a very troubled time, often seen from a slightly different angle, makes for enthralling viewing.

    Marvellous.

Michael Kitchen as Foyle is so very believeable, and Honeysuckle Weeks gets the accent of the time off perfectly. We should have more of these stories - the series are always too short. A question of 'always leave them wanting more'??
