I'm ashamed to say that before watching this film, we had never heard of Frances Farmer. Must now go and look her up on the internet. Jessica Lange gives a stunning performance as this sad, failed movie star who wouldn't conform until electrolysis and a lobotomy transformed her completely and took her independent spirit away.

Extremely, well filmed - the colours were superb and the direction was unnoticeable so it must have been good. Music fits in well including the pieces of classical music used along with the original score.

Interesting to see Clifford Odets (director of 'None but the lonely hearts' and author of several plays) portrayed in this as a manipulating 'sh*te'!

Must look out for more starring Jessica Lange and Sam Shepard

About the reviewer: crispin40

I'm a retired high school librarian. Living with my partner who is also female for over 39 years. She has teminal bone cancer and when we were given a prognosis of 6 months for her to live in 2005, we made great use of our LoveFilm (or ScreenSelect) subscription. Watching films and reading books kept us sane! We're happy to say that she's still with us, (November 2007), still driving and still enjoying life. We do enjoy the odd, quirky film - often foreign but they must be well made, scripted, directed etc.
