this film tells the 'true life' (more on that later) story of Hollywood film actress Francis Farmer. As a talented free thinking young woman and a bit of a rebel (branded a blasphemer and communist sympathiser) Farmer did not fit into the typical Hollywood mould. As such her life was destroyed by those around her resulting in eventual incarceration in a mental institution. It is a powerful, sad and harrowing film in which Jessica Lange does a great job in the role of Farmer. However having read a biography of Francis Farmer previously I was dissapointed by the fact that the ending was (in true Hollywood style)a dramatic fictionalised account of what really happened to her. For those who don't want to know stop reading now!!-
in the film she is eventually given a lobotomy. According to the biography this never happened. However still well worth watching.
