  • A very accurate, if slow-moving, adaptation

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Hallmark's production of Frankenstein is the most accurate adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel that I have seen, with good performances from Alec Newman and Luke Goss as creator and creation, excellent production values and in particular fine designs for the lab and the Creature. However, it also runs over three hours, reflecting the size of the novel in a rather slow pace. It would probably be of most interest to fans of the genre who prefer atmosphere to excitement.

The DVD contains the story, split into two episodes, chapter selection, and a brief behind-the-scenes interview piece and trailer.

Not a bad film, although rather long. It strays a long way from the original book but it is well acted

Tedious adaptation of Mary Shelley's novel. Incredibly slow with particularly dire special effects and a way way overlong running time. Can't understand why the likes of Sutherland or Hurt would have anything to do with this - there must have been an attractive pay packet promised. Unconvincing acting by all doesn't help. This is just bad.

  • Frankenstein Is A Strong But Non-Horrific Tale!

This is a long historical epic film about the 'Frankenstein' story. Firstly this is a long film that lasts well into 3/4hours. The Film is cut into two parts, which makes it easier viewing. This film follows the story of a young student interested in the magical world of science and life and death. This isn’t the typical 'Frankenstein' outlook with the guy with the bolts in his neck. Frankenstein is a young student studying science and willing to push the boundaries or what can be achieved. Obviously he creates a monster from bits of humans. But the choices Frankenstein makes is kind of his undoing. Put it this way many people are sacrificed! The acting is strong and smart with the monster and 'Frankenstein' putting in some strong scenes. There isn’t any horror in this piece what so ever! So don’t rent this if you want to see blood and gore and thrills cause there is very little. It’s an emotional story that delves deep into the characters and tells their story the best it can. The settings, props, locations and cast are all top notch. It is very entertaining film but it can get kind of silly near the end (kind of wish there was a better ending). This isn’t any horror but its a good strong period piece that takes the Frankenstein story into new and different surroundings. Overall not a bad film, some very good shots and its generally beautiful to watch.

    4 out of 5 stars
