I'm trapped between a rock and hard place.

I love Frankie Boyle, his comedy style is brilliant. I'm also a fan of Mock the Week, this is wherein the problem is found.

The show is unfortunately covered in his MtW material, to the point at which maybe 75% I'd already heard. Devilishly funny the first time round, but in the DVD it over-shadowed any new laughs.

If you have seen all or nearly all of Mock the Week, its probably not worth renting. If you haven't - its a must see

  • The Best Stand Up Comedian...Ever!

This is the first time I've ever watched Frankie Boyle. I decided to try and find something by him to watch after reading his funny column in The Sun newspaper. I was chuffed to see that there were a few dvds available and 2 of them being stand up. At the same time I also got his other stand up dvd and boy they were both absolutely hilarious!! It doesn't matter if you are politically correct to enjoy this because he delivers his jokes and overall performance to perfection. It seems effortless as he puts on his show. He is just himself with no fakeness of character or gimmickery or need for silly costumes or singing like many other stand up comedians do. The suit and the specs are really all this comedy genius needs. He owns his stage with huge confidence. He is unique in the way he picks on members of his audience which displays a real talent from Frankie as none of this is rehearsed and most highlights his performance. Yes, it is very crude, nothing can be more cruder than this but you have to see it to believe in him. It's so easy to just dismiss a crude comedian that has to use serious verbal political incorrectiveness to get a laugh...but it isn't like that with Boyle...they say it's the way you tell 'em...with him it's how you can turn something so serious to something so funny that you have to laugh because you know you shouldn't really be laughing at all. Now that is clever.

A soi-disant Black comic who provides a good night out but has little of any real political weight to say. He never goes deeply into any subject but relies on a superficial turn-of-wit that resemble marketing slogans where the form and the content are identical. His anti-capitalist UK republicanism is frequently implied but never fruitfully explored in the quest for the next big laugh to the next big joke. Interestingly, he has regular surreal moments conjuring up brilliant word pictures to accurately describe something he is railing against – with incredible pith and celerity; brevity being the soul of wit. Nothing like an actual Black comic like Richard Pryor or Eddie Murphy, but not a complete waste of time either.
