Until Wes Craven dragged his seminal Nightmare on Elm Street saga into another realm altogether with his re-energised New Nightmare (1994), the series had ground to a tired halt. Director Rachel Talalay's gimmick-laden sixth instalment about the child-murdering dream-stalker's exploits in nightmare land is a virtual rehash of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, with an astonishingly lame 3-D climax tacked on. Roseanne Barr (billed here as Mrs Tom Arnold), Johnny Depp (who starred in the original) and Alice Cooper make cameo appearances to little effect in a ho-hum blending of reality and surrealism. Only for those in the right state of mindlessness.

  • Sixth and, with luck, the last of the Nightmare On Elm Street series, which has little to offer other than the gimmick of an ineffectual 3-D climax.

In other words A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 6, this essentially marks the end of the film series proper. To be fair this film has a decent idea at it's heart, as Freddy attempts to relocate from his old killing grounds via his daughter, and we get to see a lot of Freddy backstory that has previously only been alluded to - but unfortunately the execution isn't much cop. Despite some good gorey special effects Freddy himself has never seemed less scary - almost every appearance is puntuated by dire puns and comedy poses (the opening where Freddy is cast as the broomstick riding witch from the Wizard of Oz sets the tone), and every time the film starts to get interesting the mood is ruined by a moment of pure cheesiness (witness:the kickboxing abused teen girl character; the jokey video game nightmare; a 90's teen going on a stereotypical 60's hippie drug trip; the junkie clinic with an armoury in the basement, etc). If you've come this far with the series Freddy's Dead will just about be watchable, but it squanders a decent premise by jettisoning any atmosphere for teen movie-style wisecracks and cheesy action sequences.

    Nightmare 6

OK, to watch this movie you REALLY need to see Nightmares 1 - 5 first, or it just wont make sense! The story line is a bit cheesy but any true Freddy fan will love it all the same. Shame about the 3D ending not being on this DVD but it wasn't all that great anyway. After the first 2 sequels Freddy has become more of a comedian than an horrific murderer but thats what is loved about him. The story line in this movie is brilliant and it keeps you really attached until the final showdown between Fred & his offspring!
