Free Jimmy

the best way that u can watch this film is if you have had a smokes and are smashed in which case it will give you a few laughs

Apparently the original Norwegian version is very good. If that's true, then surely the blame for this being so dull and depressing has to be laid at the feet of Simon Pegg's shallow, turgid and lumpen script.

I'm sure Simon Pegg is a nice enough bloke, but he's a long way from being the comic genius the media has allowed him to believe he is.

I'm all for films that show the hideous way we treat our animals, but not if its at the expense of ill treating the audience, which this nasty little film seems to want to do at every opportunity.

Roy Arnie, an inept criminal, smuggles heroin by sewing it under the skin of an elephant. He then adicts the elephant, Jimmy, to drugs and forces him to perform is his rather pitiful circus. When Jimmy goes on the rampage after taking too many 'uppers' Roy and his stoner friends head off into the moors to find him - and the million quids worth of powder sewn in his rear end. Throw in a bunch of awful animal rights activists (the kind that give those who genuinly care a bad name) and a group of Moose hunting Scottish nutters, and mayhem ensues.

The plot itself has mostly a stoner apeal and is clearly aimed at that kind of audience. It's utterly daft, but that's not why I hated this film, after all I watched it for the idiotic plot line. The problem is the animal cruelty. I found much of it extremely distressing, and as such I couldn't find it funny. It just wasn't my kind of humor, and I hold my hands up to the fact that I should of assumed that from the start.

In addition I found the animation more than a little creepy. And despite the extremely impressive voice cast: Woody Harrelson, Simon Pegg (who also wrote the English language screenplay), David Tennant, Emilia Fox, and Samantha Morton, I didn't actually recognise any of their voices as I was watching it.

If this film apeals to you I imagine you will actually enjoy it. But if you are an animal lover and you find it hard to compromise your opinions in the name of comedy then I wouldn't recommend you bother with this.

I admit, there was a fault with the sound (which made the film kinda unwatchable after 5 minutes or so), but it did also look rather terrible! i thought the film looked good on paper, with some good actors' involvement, and maybe i didnt give it a chance, but after seeing so little of the film i had no inclination to give it another try!
