a HUGE film, unmissable...!!By PaulaWestwood (397 reviews) from Ashton-Under-Lyne , 03 Mar 2007
[Highly rated reviewer]This is one of those extraordinary true to life films that simply blow you away while you watch it. Surrounding the attempt to integrate various cultures into a school in Long Beach California after the Rodey King riots, this shows the winning of hearts and minds, and the changes that can be made through examples and choices. It is perhaps particularly quite relevant with the current situation of increased gang problems here in the UK.
This is an inspirational, emotional blender of a story, that is unquestionably my film of 2007 so far The positives in this film are immense, miss this at your peril, this is a brilliant piece of real life movie and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. 5 stars plus !

Enjoyable but not an all time favouriteBy a customer from Glasgow , 29 Jul 2009My boyfriend recommended this film to be saying it was fantastic and I'd really enjoy it, I think he was a bit over enthusiastic but it was still a good film. I do think it is a story which has been done a few time before although obviously this is based on a true story. I want to be a teacher myself which is why, I think, my boyfriend suggested it. It's good to see a teacher going that extra mile for her class against the cynicisms of older teachers and good to see how she treats all the pupils the same but at some points you wonder why she goes quite so far for just one class. All in all a good film, enjoyable to watch and I would watch it again but it's not one of my all time favourites.

Tired StoryBy a customer from Surrey , 09 Jul 2009I feel like I'm the only person in the world not to enjoy this film much! Its a tired story done many times with the same slightly cringy moralistic preaching. Yes, Swank and Staunton were very good - consumate actresses who made the film bearable until the end but I would'nt wax lyrical over it.
Inspirational perhapsBy a customer from Cheltenham , 05 Jul 2009If I were training to become a teacher in a multi-cultural environment this film would inspire me. I'm not in that situation but I was entertained up to a point, my partner fell asleep.
I am sickened that some children have to grow up in a society as described in this film. In future however, if I want to learn more about such things I will research it online or watch a documentary. I do not really want to watch a feature length movie about kids in gangs resisting attempts to educate them.
