This deeply twisted version of Little Red Riding Hood brought the exceptionally talented Reese Witherspoon to the attention of a wider audience. She plays a feisty young teenager from a dysfunctional family who sets off to find her grandmother, falling foul of psycho Bob Wolverton (Kiefer Sutherland) en route. Witherspoon is a revelation as the foul-mouthed teenage rebel, Sutherland is great as her nemesis, and there are enjoyable cameos from Amanda Plummer, Dan Hedaya and Brooke Shields. It went straight to video in the UK, but don't let that put you off.

    A forgotten odd gem

This deliciously dark fairy tale, roughly based around Little Red Riding Hood but updated to include serial-killing paedophiles, drive-by shootings and teenage prostitution, benefits greatly from some fortuitous casting.

Featuring Kiefer Sutherland in his post-Young Guns/Flatliners and pre-24 indie movie stage, much of the film is a dialogue-driven two-hander between his slimey psychologist and a young trailer-trash Reese Witherspoon. Making the role of the violent, illiterate, thieving (but strangely moral) arsonist Vanessa her own, this is still probably her best role to date (though fans of Sweet Home Alabama may be slightly shocked!)

A little patchy in places, but great weird entertainment from start to finish.

this film was my introduction to matthew bright and since i saw it, he's become my second favourite director. i had only seen witherspoon in pleasantville and the twenty-some-odd minutes of leagally blonde that i could sit through, but this cements her status as a great actress. this is both hilarious and darkly disturbing, a must for thriller fans.

    worth it

Got 3 stars because of the acting, which at times is appaling.

Reece Witherspoon isn't to convincing and Mr Sutherland.well.....

Overall though it's a class plot, everything moves really fast and it's absorbing as well as genuine, not to be watched if your not in a good place as it's quite pessimistic in it's outliik and the content is quite downbeat.

Fills a quiet night well enough

I honestly have not seen a movie quite like this before, Freeway is based loosely on the Little Red Riding Hood story and shows Reese Witherspoon as you will have never before seen her. She plays a troubled teenager, classic white trash, who following the jailing of her prostitute mother and step father decides to track down her Grandma. Her journey takes an interesting twist when she meets serial killer Sutherland. This movie is funny in places, violent and largely entertaining, the acting good enough whilst the script provides a comedy and few basics twists, an average film that fills a quiet night well enough. 3 Stars

    Reese is great!

Resse Witherspoon's performance here shows she is something special as an actress - this film won't be that much with out her. her performance mixing humour, obnoxiousness, violence and being sexy just makes this an enjoyable romp.

    Brilliant

Not for everyone thats for sure but if you like your humour very black and quite like the thought of kick-ass woman this is a great film.

This is not a bad film, just rather bizarre but good for Reese fans to see a different side!!
