Another supposed "great" that leaves me cold......

I'm not a fan, I'm afraid ( though I prefer and quite like FC2).
The original is one of those movies totally filmed on location in a dreary setting in grim weather and gloomy surroundings. I am one of those old-fashioned viewers who believe such films started the downhill path when 'solely on location' and 'realism' overtook studio sets and we lost the 'escapism' from gloomy streets, drugs and present day malaises.Thankfully it was not a phenomenon that lasted forever. Studio sets and 'escapism' were not threatened as much as I'd feared. Indeed they are alive and well today in Harry Potterland instead of Harry Brownland........so we can all be relieved.
Perhaps that's why I prefer the sequel.......all that Riviera colour and what I think is a better storyline and a more traditional plot for the good v evil scenario.
Little did I know when I yawned my way thru the original French Connection that the lead actor was to become one of my personal favourites, and indeed a massive screen star with a host of very good credits to his name. Strutting my stuff about my knowledge of cinema, my pride is hurt;) that I did not notice a real star at the beginning of his illustrious career.
What makes a film star ? If only film-makers could bottle the secret of why a little balding bloke like Gene Hackman can have such screen presence and huge ability compared to ermmmmm : let's say a little good-looking lousy actor such as Tom Cruise ( of course I don't mean it Tom,do I ??????).
Back to French Connection..........oh yes, I remember : I don't like it. But I quite like FC2. And you do not need to see the original FC in order to watch FC2------that may help a few readers avoid the gloomy original. I have done my good deed for the day :)))))))- Was this review helpful to you?

Iconic duo

Meh
By Douglas Wright III from England , 20 Jan 2011Perhaps its due to my being inundated with the utter filth that Hollywood presently attempts to pass off as cinema but, this movie just doesn't have that snap I was expecting walking into it.
Yeah, its old and maybe its influence on all of those films that followed robbed it of its orignal glory (i.e. once new, now tired).
Maybe I'm too young to understand but, while the film is ultimately a good one it suffers from what I think is a lack of editing.
The opening of some scenes just dragged on leaving me to wonder what it was I was supposed to be looking at during the 5 minutes of walking up the island for the 1 minute long meeting.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not bad, but not that great either

This was one of them, but I'm rather disappointed. The acting is questionable and the plot rather slow. It hasn't aged well either, so I think this leads to my overall lack of enthusiasm.- Was this review helpful to you?
