The charming theme here is a rapist/strangler who deftly tries to pin the blame on a close friend. There is not much mystery in this crime drama and the first hour seemed rather pedestrian. I was about to yawn and reach for the off button when suddenly it erupted into electrifying Grade A Hitchcock. Anna Massey and Bernard Cribbins are oddly cast against type as a Cockney barmaid and a not-nice publican. Alec McCowan and Vivien Merchant have comical scenes as married couple, he being a high-ranking police officer with simple tastes and she being into cooking inedible gourmet food.
