Victim hears noise. Stops. Turns. Turns back. Jason appears from nowhere holding a machete/axe/spike (delete where applicable). Quick cutaway to next scene . . . The Jason formula hits rock bottom with this static, boring and threadbare episode, directed by B-movie make-up man John Carl Buechler. New Blood contains virtually no blood; the only new addition to the bubble-gum nihilism is a telekinetic girl who may be able to destroy Jason with her psychic powers. Buechler's direction might be faceless, but Jason goes about his gory business unmasked in this, the weakest Friday the 13th of all.

    • Radio Times
  • Lacklustre continuation, still offering no variation on its basic theme of killing teenagers, especially those who display any sexual feelings. There is, though, less gore than usual; perhaps make-up was in as short supply as imagination.

The new ingedient this time is the introduction of a girl with psychic powers, who unwittingly brings back Jason from his watery grave. Following the series renaissance of Part 6:Jason Lives, The New Blood contines the high production values, with this being the slickest and best directed installment thus far. The addition of the pyschic powers gives the film an interesting new angle to play with, and while the film does suffer a mid-period slump where it goes back to the generic stalk and slash killings of annonymous teenage campers, at least none of them are actively annoying this time round. It's not all good stuff - despite a large number of deaths theres no stand out gore scenes, and the final method of finishing Jason off is very cheesy, but for the most part this is a well-made entry in the series, and the extended climactic scenes of Jason without the hockey mask is a treat for long-time viewers. Not quite as good as Part 6, but still one of the better sequels.
