Most helpful review Fritz The Cat

  • A very unique tale

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Set in the swinging 60s, animals embody the spirit of the people. Cats, pigs, crows and even horses are used to make statements (sometimes politically incorrect) about the section of society they are used to depict.

Drugs are used, orgies are had, mobs are rallied and Fritz, in his quest to discover life, experiences things most would never ask for.

A stylish vision brought to life to be as unique as its creator.

  • Dull transition

Love Crumb's work, so had high expectations, but the translation to film format just didn't work for me.

While the animation was of good quality for the time, the plot and characters were wafer-thin, with much of the story being titillation for the sake of it, rather than the supposed social commentary the film is lauded for.

It is quite rare for comic and graphic novels to make an effective switch to the big screen and is certainly a failure in this case.

I guess we just live in a more easy affluent world where politics and political issues are not as important as we thought they were. Definitely what could be termed 'a period piece'.

I am sorry I just didnt find this entertaining. It just comes across as one big tripping movie. I think you had to be a young person at the time to really appreciate this film

First saw this when we'd recently returned from the US. Found it pretty amusing with the contextual details; which wasn't generally shared by the rest of the audience. (People travel a lot more these days, so this kind of reception isn't so common now.) Crumb wasn't known to me back then, but he's a good lad. And the characterisations are quite close to the original (a little less noir, perhaps); which is good. Pity it isn't longer.
