    [Highly rated reviewer]

this film is superb. Jack the Ripper is perhaps one of the most infamous, serial killers ever known. he has become somewhat of a household name, that has withstood the test of time. The Whitechapel murders, to this day, remain unsolved, and many people find themselves morbidly drawn to this slew of ghastly occurrences.

The Hughes brothers are no different, from the countless others, who seek to dissect the facts, surrounding these heinous crimes, and they approach this fascination with cinematic fervour, creating this excellent movie.

Inspector Fred Abberline (Johnny Depp), is hot on the trail of the murderous monster. He enlists the hallucinatory effects of absinthe, which enable him to induce visions, that aid him in his quests.

Throughout his investigation, he gradually begins to fall for one, of the Whitechapel prostitutes at risk (Mary Kelly played by Heather Graham), this serves to up the ante, regarding the challenge to find the villain and, furthermore, accelerate his efforts.

Sir William Gull (Ian Holm) is a doctor, who contributes to Inspector Fred Abberline's profile of the meandering butcher. Add to this an illegitimate marriage and a royal scandal, and this equates into an enticingly dour, dark and moody thriller.

    well worth renting out.

once again depp shows how brilliant he is in a briliantly written film.

lots of death and weird stuff as can be expected from such a storyline.

    defo worth watching

I gave up on this after about 15 minutes, comedy accents and a set that looked like it had been borrowed from Muppets Christmas Carol... I thought this was meant to be set in bleak and dirty London, I kept expecting Gonzo et all to pop, or Michael Caine to come and do a song.

Thank heavens for Johnny Depp - because otherwise we would not have stayed watching. Some good bits of Victoriana but not quite convincing. Opium den scenes not convincing at all.

  • Why 'From Hell'

    Rated - 0.5 stars

Worst Alan Moore adaptation ever. Why bother taking a book loved by thousands if not millions of readers if to alter everything which made it original and interesting. In addition, Johnny Depp's performance is ridiculous, just as much as the presence of Heather Graham as an 18th century prostitute. The movie doesn't make sense, cutting short some of the passages from the graphic novel without realizing their necessity for further passages. The music is god awful and completely redundant. The villains look like villains (a special 'bravo' to Ian Holmes' black eye effect, just ridiculous), the good guys like good guys. It's so unoriginal it hurts.

Anyway, if you think you might enjoy an original, complex and interesting take at Jack the Ripper, go buy Alan Moore's graphic novel and don't even bother with the movie.

An excellent adaptation of a jack the ripper film which cleverly used several theories and entwined them.

very enjoyable and definitely worth watching
