THE BEST BOND FILM 1962-2009
By roncoach (369 reviews) from suffolk , 05 Nov 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
This is my favourite Bond Movie, the second in the long series of 007 thrillers that run from 1962 to 2009. At the time of writing this review in 2011, the final casting for the latest Bond offering is virtually completed------I wish the current Bond ( Daniel Craig) every success----IMHO he is the third best actor to play the famous role after the Master : Connery; and the second-best :Brosnan).
Back in 1963, when 'From Russia With Love' was eagerly awaited after the first Bond in Dr No, Sean Connery was consolidating his skills to become the best-ever to hold 'the license to kill'.
And, when it appeared, it did not disappoint. It was better than the first Bond film and made a fortune at the box-office.
I personally think that 'From Russia With Love' is by far the best in the series from 1962 right up to the last one to emerge in 2009.
In addition to Connery at his best, the film also benefits from being one of the original Fleming novels ( there's no doubt the series declined when all the original novels had been 'used up'); and it benefits from exotic locations, skulldugerry on a train ( I love espionage thrillers on trains :))), and a fine supporting performance from the villain of the piece in the form of Robert Shaw.
About the only 'negative' was the lack of a troop of ' Bond Girls' ( which we all looked forward to:)), and a poor and unknown female actress in the leading female role.
But one of the supporting female ( possibly a female LOL) cast provides what I suppose everyone remembers the whole film for , above all else : those famous , deadly shoes !!!!!!
This is a rip-roaring early Bond thriller that IMHO is yet to be beaten.

(33)The Gold Standard Bond movie
By MacMcB (13 reviews) , 30 Apr 2013No matter what you've heard or read, this is The Best Bond Movie. Last year's Skyfall was pretty good, but it was bound to be a dissapointment when people started calling it the 'Best Bond ever'. This IS the best - with all the essential elements in place, the most sauve and dangerous Bond (Connery), the most scary villians (Rosa Klebb and Blofeld when he was still a serious character), the best villian's henchman (Robert Shaw, a proper actor doing actual terrifying acting), the best narrative and a real plot, no stupid gimmicks or impossible stunts - James Bond was tough but not Superman - a great Bond girl, and the all-time best fight scene, on the Orient Express. To quote the producers in later years, 'we always start out to make From Russia with Love'. So this is the gold standard, James Bond in a thriller that is actually thrilling, great characters and exotic locations. If you haven't seen this, then you are in for a treat.- Was this review helpful to you?

Connery Classic
By oJo (29 reviews) from Hemel Hempstead , 28 Feb 2013If you don't like this, get a life! Why, if you don't care for Bond, would you watch this? If you do then will already know that there is no one better to play the part of Bond than Mr. Connery. Heaven knows that the latest 'bonds' have been some of the best there has been, but you cannot beat this as one of the all time classics of the cinema. It's in blu-ray, just rent it! 'James Bond will return..' Again and again- Was this review helpful to you?

Second Bond film was second best
By Bobsview (559 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 07 Feb 2013The second Bond film was feverishly awaited but was sadly not as good as the first. Set in Istanbul, Venice . Lots of scenes on a train journey. Now looks very dated with lots of horrendous back projection . Weak Bond girl. No big set . Worth seeing for completeness but not a classic Bond film. This was a Bond film that we had to get through before the illustrious Goldfinger set the standard.- Was this review helpful to you?

From Russia with Love
By lukemcgrath (28 reviews) from Newcastle upon Tyne , 11 Nov 2011Still missing some key elements, and not set in Russia, Bond Part Two is a film that cements 007 as a spy who entertains.- Was this review helpful to you?
