  • Imagine Jaws and Open Water - but on a ski lift

    [Highly rated reviewer]

Yes dear readers, you read the title right. This is indeed a horror movie that bares not a few similarities to the above films. And is based on and around a ski lift. And yet for all that this is a wonderfully effective and visceral experience that needs to be seen to be believed. If you have the stomach for it that is...

The film's premise is simple; three college kids go skiing for the weekend and by a slight stretch of the imagination end up stranded in a ski lift chair as night sets in. With the resort closed for the rest of the week our trio must decide what they want to do: Stay on the lift in the sub-zero temperatures, climb across the razor sharp cable above them, or jump to the ground far below them.

Needless to say the results of any of these actions aren't going to be pretty. But 'Frozen' almost demands you think to yourself 'What would I do?' even as it swiftly shows you what would happen to you if you did. And this is one of the greatest strengths of the film, to put you into these three people's (ski) shoes and force you to experience the terror first hand. However although at times the visuals are incredibly cringe inducing, its the use of cut away angles that is most effective, leaving your imagination to fill in the grisly details. But this is definitely not one for people with a fragile constitution, and you may find your fellow movie goers hiding behind their popcorn come certain scenes.

Clearly 'Frozen' is intended to be a thrill and tense ride and it succeeds marvellously at this. The main drawback to the film is the slow beginning and a slight lull in the middle that may have you wishing for some more gore (or not). But on the plus side it isn't long before the pace picks up again and we are once again swinging along with our protagonists. And special mention must go to the performances, particularly to Emma Bell who makes an only slightly annoying female lead (which for films like this is quite a marvel), and particularly to Shawn Ashmore (Iceman from 'X-Men' - no pun intended), who is very convincing in his part as the third wheel in the trio.

For anyone who has 'enjoyed', if that's the right word, films like 'Saw', 'Open Water', or 'P2', you will definitely get something from 'Frozen'. If fleshy wounds and grisly visuals aren't your thing then you may want to give this a miss. Or you could hide behind the person in front of you. But this is definitely a worthy little movie that deserves to do well, even though it isn't the best advert for a holiday to the Alps.

Thriller -3 young people stuck on a chair lift in a ski resort for a week after the resort has closed for a break. Horrific.

  • Good little chiller

This is one of those low budget nasties that actually works really well. Three young skiiers find themselves stranded on a ski lift, dangling in the midst of a blizzard and on a mountain that’s just been closed for the week. Prospects not looking too good. Green makes great use of his surprisingly claustrophic locale and then throws in some gruesome extras like ravenous wolves, broken tibulas and hands frozen onto metal bars to up the ante. It might wander a little towards the end, but mostly this is a lean, mean and tight little thriller.

This was not the worst movie I have ever seen, but it could have been better. I cannot imagine three people sat on a stranded ski lift, and between the lot of them, couldn't come up with a better idea than jumping, especially when the other scaled the wire and got down by ladder. I got to the end of it, and was pleasantly pleased, but not enthralled, so I don't think I will be visiting this particular ski slope again

  • I think the cold got to their brain cells!

The premise of this film was good. However the characters were sooo stupid it really spoilt the movie. They made absolutely no effort to keep warm! Which surely would have been a number one survival priority. They didn't think about any of the consequences of their actions and didn't seem to think about all the options they had or work through any solutions. A film becomes scary/real when the characters do all the things they possibly could do and it still doesn't work out. This lot were so stupid, I couldn't have cared less if they had survived or not!

What an obsolete loads of rubbish, the critics must have been watching a different film. Weak acting, implausible story line and just an unbelievable story. The ending, well if you are going to watch it I wont spoil it, but to say the least they all don't make it. If the actors got out. Avoid unless you want some background noise while you watch paint dry.
