[Highly rated reviewer]Cinema doesn't get much better than this.
The film is effectively in 2 parts. The first shows the marine recruits in training, having every last bit of individuality trained and bullied out of them. Brutal.
The second half is in nam on tour. Beautifully shot.

Very believable.By WhiteDwarf500 (1 review) , 04 Nov 2013Great film. Sgt Hartman had my back straightening. Troops in training are feral, pack creatures and this film captures the feeling perfectly.

I don't want no teenage queen, I just want my M14!By a customer , 18 Aug 2013This is a great film, one of the greatest war films ever, with quality acting and music from the time. R Lee Emery is chilling and superb as Gunny Hartman, and screams out some of the most memorable lines in cinema history. It also has a poignant ending, that shows how grim and dark war can be without leaving you depressed or feeling down, like some war films I've seen do.
One of the best Vietnam War filmsBy Chas1989 (17 reviews) , 11 Aug 2013
[Highly rated reviewer]Just one great war movie.
R. Lee Ermey is the star of this whole film. His performance is terrifyingly realistic which is no surprise given he was a drill instructor. Apparently Stanley Kubrick allowed him to improvise his lines which shows how good his performance was.
Kubrick really manages to bring home the hell of the Vietnam War by showing the brutal training regime and then the hell of Vietnam itself.
One other plus point - the soundtrack. Great use of music from the time.
