Why did I rent this?
I'm not exactly an anime nut and the fact that the dubbing actors generally don't get to read their scripts before recording makes most anime painful to watch. Not so FMP. If the cast were making up their parts as they were going along then they must be improvisational genii. So I guess the actors actually got to do some proper acting with this one. Don't get me wrong it's not Shakespeare but they all out-act Keanu Reeves and we pay a bunch of money to watch him shamble through turgid techno-thrillers a damn sight less exciting than this, right?
This first DVD details the mission of three teenage operatives of clandestine anti-terrorist army the Tuatha De Danaan (Celtic Mythology! Wow!) who operate out of a giant deep sea submarine and - obviously - pilot mega-huge robot death machines (the Arms Slaves).
All good and Science Fictiony. Then the weird bit kicks in. Our teenage army bods are assigned to safeguard the life of a sixteen year old anime babe (small mouth, long legs, enormous... eyes) called Chidori. They choose anal-retentive super soldier Sousuke to be her on the street secret bodyguard and the story suddenly veers into a strange saucy Japanese comedy of high school manners in which Sousuke continually makes accidental incursions upon the honour of Chidori.
So one minute it's Russian soldiers in a war zone the next it's whoops where's my panties. Having said that, despite the strangeness of it all the cheeriness and grimness serve to compliment each other and if you're any kind of anime fan when the cliff hanger hits you you'll be ordering disc two as fast as I did.
The first 12 episodes of this series are some of the best anime on offer today - great characters, jokes that are actually funny to a western audience, hot mecha action, and the right amount of pathos. 5 stars, no question.
After episode 12 it really takes a dive - it would be safe to stop at that point unless you are a hopeless completist. 2 stars, maybe 3 (it's at least watchable).
