Continuing the brilliant anime series. The philosophers stone mystery both unfolds slightly and deepens further. Scar - a state alchemist killer is on the loose with a vengeance whilst Full Metal and his brother find someone who can finally point them to the catalystic red stone but are dismayed when they discover the stones history. We are introduced to more alchemists with Strongarm, Crystal and the Führer. Full Metal even has a stand-off with the fire alchemist. The only let down is the lack of any really impressive alchemy happening. We also learn more about the dark haired lady and her greedy sidekick 'Gluttony' who have been keeping a watch on Elrich.
The series is back on form after the rather silly distraction of Psyren in Volume 3. There's plenty of misery as we learn about the tragic fate of Winry's parents and Ed and Al continue to struggle, but the pain is made bearable by lashings of humour and Ed's sheer bolshiness. On the downside, there's a truly hateable new theme tune, but you can't have everything.
