By now everyone must know that this is the film which catapulted Streisand to instant stardom, in much the same way that 'It's Magic' did with Doris Day in her first film in the forties.

The stage show in London was much more exciting because it was clear from the very off that we were in the presence of a great star. What has happened since can only be a disappointment regarding the career of La Streisand. Viewing the film again after several years the music is good and stands the test of time well. Not sure about her tho', she doesnt so much act as posturise and I must confess to finding it rather tedious to watch...not the film....her! Her career went nowhere really, stories of her being difficult to work with didnt help and I cant think of a single movie of hers barring 'The Way We Were', and that mainly because of Redford, that I would willingly sit through again. However she has a great and large following, but Oh My God...those 'Focker' movies are really something else and must be the nadir of De Niro's career.

If you like Streisand , if you like a great score and opulently mounted Follies type numbers, and dont mind the shallow posturing that stands for acting, then this is your film.
