It Doesn't Get Better...
By Michael from Manchester, England , 23 Oct 2006[Highly rated reviewer]
For anyone who remembers this the first time round, watching it a second time is even better. If you haven't seen it, but remember the Hatton Liverpool years, this series will strike more than a few chords.
Robert Lindsay is on excellent form as the self-obsessed leader of the council; but it is Michael Palin who steals the show with an understated and perfectly-pitched performance of the headmaster fighting to stay true to his socialist ideals, whilst those around him use the Labour Party as their own personal horn of plenty.
Alan Bleasdale is, of course, one of the best writers that this country has ever produced. For me, G.B.H. is his masterstroke; it is the yardstick by which all other serious TV writing can be measured. As each disc arrived in the post, we put it on and watched both episodes in one sitting. It then went straight back in the post in order that we may get the next one as soon as possible.
If you enjoy this, allow me to recommend Life On Mars - another excellent TV series.- Was this review helpful to you?

By a customer from UK , 23 Jun 2008This series was burned into my memory & to find that it has (finally) been released on dvd is a dream come true.
This was first broadcast in 1991 but reflects Britain at the height of Thatcherism in the mid 80's. It really delivers on a number of levels, satire, social comment, superb acting as well as an overall fine piece of TV drama.
When the first couple of episodes appeared on our screens, Derek Hatton said that GBH stood for "Good Bye Hatton" as if Michael Murray was portraying him!
It's worth a look if only to see Robert Lindsay give the performance of his career in this series but don't just read these reviews, go & watch it!- Was this review helpful to you?
