I used this title when I reviewed the recent A-Team movie. However the title is equally applicable to this film. From the outset this film is loud, with helicopters going down, to rocket launchers and high calibre guns being fired. The CGI to be fair is impressive you would expect nothing less from Paramount and MGM, the story is functional though at times it does slow down too much but then gets back on track with some action. There is a complete sub-plot involving Storm Shadow, which could've been left out for a solo effort and only really serve's one of the many conveniences this film has. Acting wise Dwayne Johnson essentially carries the film with his trademark charisma while mixing grit with swagger. The newcomers including Adrianne Palicki, unfortunately are no improvement on Marlon Wayans and Rachel Nichols. While Ray Stevenson is given no background other than being a soldier. Bruce Willis is actually one of the better performers as he is given simple functional dialogue, and as such doesn't need to stretch himself. The film's grasp of politics is overly simplistic, while Cobra Commander is left spouting cartoon villainy lines. This the action is solid and there are some good moments adults will laugh at more than the 8-14 years old this film is designed for. In the end it's a solid way to kick of summer blockbuster season unfortunately for it better things are to come and this film will not live long in the memory.

.....is Bruce Willis's humorous reply when asked if he is alright after an almighty firefight, and this is the best line in the movie. But after hearing it so many times in the trailers by the time the film itself reached the cinema I had already gotten tired of hearing it. Still, the 3D is actually rather good most of the time, particularly during a mountain-face fight with some nasty ninjas. On the whole though this is a typical gung ho action flick with nothing much to lift it out of the ordinary.

As a fan of GI Joe or Action Force as it was known in the UK when growing up, I had to see how this film compared to the first one. The second instalment raises the bar again and is definitely worth watching. Plenty of action, fight scenes and special effects to keep you entertained.

  • Good fun film, but an awful sequel

Now, let me be clear...I'm a GI Joe fan. I grew up with it, loved the comics, adored the toys and will always love GI Joe. There is a lot that could be done with a franchise like this. It's no more surreal than Batman and look at what Nolan did with that. Of course, there are many more characters to include here, which seems to have caused some confusion. The continuity is so horrific we should take the script writers to The Hague and find some place not restricted by the Geneva Convention to punish them. With the exception of a couple of main characters from the first film, they're all gone. In case you're worried that the film needs to explain these omissions, fear not. They didn't want to waste the time. No Ripcurl, Scarlett, Baroness, Hawk or Pitt. All that time spent developing Duke and Baroness in the first film, though, surely wasn't for nothing, was it? After all, Duke is still here... 15 minutes later and Duke is dead. Making most of the first film obsolete. Destro follows him quickly... Storm Shadow is still alive, though. Yes he survived the injuries and plummeting bareskin into the Arctic ocean. No, they don't tell us how. However, given this incredible feat, it transpires he was not smart enough to discover his entire life was a set-up. The Storm Shadow-Snake Eyes relationship develops quite well, although it's quite poorly executed. For fans of the comics, it starts to follow a similar path to that storyline. It's a good, fun film, but it's a terrible sequel. They should have just started all over again. Hopefully, they will continue properly and develop the characters they have devoted time to in this film. If you can overlook some of the odd oversights, such as the entire GI Joe team (except Snake Eyes) being caught out in the open, by surprise, with nuclear weapons and an underground prison having no emergency lockdown procedure, you will enjoy it. It's a fast-paced action flick with great CGI and Bruce Willis added for no other reason that to scowl into the camera at every opportunity. Who doesn't love that scowl?
