Stylish but flawed
By exellp (7 reviews) from Leeds , 31 Jul 2010[Highly rated reviewer]
As someone who knew little of Gainsbourg's accomplishments and notoriety, this frequently left me bewildered. Women came and went, which isn't a surprise, but enough knowledge of his life was assumed by the film-maker to the point that whole wives (and children) appeared out of nowhere. He certainly lived, but some basic, essential facts were omitted such that much of the story was fragmented and incoherent. Nevertheless, it is a stylish and glamorous affair and Gainsbourg himself is a rivetting presence.- Was this review helpful to you?

Tres Chic!!
By celondelon (41 reviews) from London , 27 Dec 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
Edith Piaf was given the big screen treatment so I guess it was just a matter of time before Serge received the same treatment. I did I know a little bit about him, French, singer, his famous lovers but what I didn't know is that he's Jewish and survived the second world war without entering a concentration camp and had two sisters and loving parents but this was covered too briefly for my liking along with the relationships (except Jane). However they do capture his amazing charm and charisma it's a wonderful creative ride and very enjoyable and a great introduction to his music to me he's no longer the randy old goat who tried it on with Whitney Houston!!!- Was this review helpful to you?

A film of smoke and mirrors.
By BurntCoffee (1 review) from Crieff , 30 Jul 2012A surreal and stylistic exposure of one of France's, if not one of the world's, greatest and most controversial musical icons. The film examines Gainsbourg's inner demons that he seemed to carry most of his life, and sheds a light as to why he lived the way he did. Carrying on the popular method in French cinema with effective juxtaposition of dream and reality, binding the two together often often.
The film looks, sounds and is sensual yet exciting, and I would recommend this film to anybody wishing to see a glimpse into a tormented genius' mind.- Was this review helpful to you?
