In the relatively small field of art documentary travelogues, Gallivant is an interesting addition. The filmmaker takes his young disabled daughter and his ninety year old mother on a trip round the British coast. They meet various characters, some funny, some abusive, some confused. There are frequently very beautiful moments, and the scenes between the daughter and her great grandmother are funny and often touching.

However, the director continuously undermines this by asking stupis questions of locals ('Did you ever think you could fall off the earth?' is one gem) and often shows a tiresome need to plant himself in front of the camera for no discernable reason.

The film's final effect is rather undermined by this posing, and by the end you are left with the sneaking suspicion that there was not much substance in Kotting's hypothesis. For a truly fantastic dissection of British social and natural landscape, rent Patrick Keiller's extraordianary Robinson In Space, which has a similar approach but with a much less fussy aesthetic, and addresses very vital problems.

  • A nutty, quirky, eccentric British film

    Rated - 3.0 stars

At times infuriating with its speeded up filming, self regarding subjective content, and pure daffiness, this was nevertheless an interestingly different way of presenting a film. Quite how you film a journey round the coast of Britain in 100 minutes I'll leave you to find out, but there were large chunks of coastline, e.g North Devon and the whole of East Anglia, apparently unfilmed. Although after about half an hour I was looking forward to them arriving home again.

  • Can Ye Sew Cushions?

Kotting's film about his journey around the perimeter of mainland Great Britain is a remarkably personal family tribute and an insightful, heartwarming celebration of British eccentricity and local traditions: lollipop ladies, gurners, sea shanties and the man with the best-kept toilets in Scotland combine with present day topics such as rapid modernisation and disaffected teenagers. The sense of what differentiates and unites British people of different generations and locations is well presented here but the director's continuous experimentation with various formats, overlays and speeded-up action becomes annoyingly repetitive and unnecessary.

  • Not a good as 'This Filthy Earth'

    Rated - 2.0 stars

Amongst any other work he's done Andrew Kotting directed a film - 'This Filthy Earth'. It's one of the most amazing, crazed films I've ever seen and I can't recommend it enough. Described on the case as like 'Thomas Hardy on acid', which is about right. Unfortunately, it's not available through ScreenSelect.

Gallivant does'nt come close to 'This Filthy Earth I'm afraid'. It's an original approach and has some amusing moments but it does'nt really go anywhere.
