Brutal! Bloody! Little bit mixed up.By PeterC (23 reviews) from Falmouth , 11 Sep 2009
THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide
[Highly rated reviewer]This wasnt quite what I was expecting, sure theres plenty of blood and guts, people being variously killed and maimed via gunshot, grenade and speeding van but they are also trying to make a point, or even multiple points, about desensitisation of viewers to violence, lack of empathy for media reported carnage, etc. Though it would be pushing it a little to say they really make the viewer question their own complicity in this, blah, blah, blah. Especially when Gerard Butler picks up someone who is being directed by someone else via mind control and smashes the guys spine over his knee.
So, a little more detail: Gerard is on death row (for unlicensed osteopathy perhaps?), along with lots and lots of other people, and society has once again decided that if they survive enough episodes of a death-dealing, highly-rated tv show they get a pardon. Where do they get their ideas? The catch is they are controlled by a remote game player via said mind control. Gerard is nearly at the required 30 shows but guess what? Someone is being a bit dishonest and someone else again has their own agenda. Whoda thunk? It does have a slightly more complex plot than say the recent (also convict killing for TV ratings) Death Race and it tries to be a bit more political without squarely hitting the mark but essentially its a more complicated version of Running Man with the hero pretending not to have a Scottish accent rather than pretending not to have an Austrian accent, a less linear plot and a more exploratory approach to camera movement and colour pallet.
Above average brutality and in your face blood letting, even by modern action film standards!

Oooooh GamerBy Angelguard (31 reviews) from London , 19 Nov 2013A snitchen reminder of the good old fashioned games like Doom and medal of honour - perfect with Gerard Butler and other actors - loved every minute of it!
Dexter like youve never seen him beforeBy TheWatchman (745 reviews) from Suburbia , 15 Aug 2013Okay, I know that this is really a Gerard Butler film, but you cant talk about Gamer without mentioning TVs most charming serial killer, Dexter (played by Michael C Hall). Here, we see a side of him which wouldnt be seen dead in Miami Metro PD. He talks with a southern US accent, sings and dances while he brainwashes hordes of badguys to do his bidding he really lets his dark passenger run wild! But anyway, enough of the baddie. Were really here to watch Gerard Butler as a convict whos forced to allow himself to be controlled by a computer game playing kid in a violent game of death. And it is violent. The shoot outs are pretty well done and theres plenty of action and sexual depravity to keep the (mainstream) masses amused. Dont expect too much in the way of a story or character development, but were you really thinking there would be in a Gerard Butler film (bless him)? Its style over substance. Which is a bad thing if youre looking for a deep and meaningful film. However, I was expecting rampant bloodshed and plenty of fighting and I got just that (plus Dexter behaving like he was on drugs). What more could I wish for? Well, apart from a coherent plot, but, hey, you cant have everything in life!
Weirdly Wonderful :-)By Aspey (3 reviews) , 08 Jun 2013good story, to my knowledge nothing has been done like that before, is weird but worth a watch if interested in something different.
All action and not much else.By thesav (16 reviews) from Southport , 07 Feb 2013The film has holes in its premise, in its execution and its plot. When the plot does try to bring the film along it is submerged beneath loud and incomprehensible action and violence. Okay if you are really drunk and feeling anti-social.
Waste of my time, especially as disk was scratched and ending didn't play.By a customer , 23 Jan 2013Would give it no stars if I could. I was expecting this to be similar to Death Race, given the description. Could have warned us there is a Sims like theme in the movie too. If I wanted to see topless women and a naked fat man I would have rented a different film. Very disappointing. Also cannot skip the trailers before the film.
