    [Highly rated reviewer]

This wasn’t quite what I was expecting, sure there’s plenty of blood and guts, people being variously killed and maimed via gunshot, grenade and speeding van but they are also trying to make a point, or even multiple points, about desensitisation of viewers to violence, lack of empathy for media reported carnage, etc. Though it would be pushing it a little to say they really make the viewer question their own complicity in this, blah, blah, blah. Especially when Gerard Butler picks up someone who is being directed by someone else via mind control and smashes the guy’s spine over his knee.

So, a little more detail: Gerard is on death row (for unlicensed osteopathy perhaps?), along with lots and lots of other people, and society has once again decided that if they survive enough episodes of a death-dealing, highly-rated tv show they get a pardon. Where do they get their ideas? The catch is they are controlled by a remote game player via said mind control. Gerard is nearly at the required 30 shows but guess what? Someone is being a bit dishonest and someone else again has their own agenda. Whoda thunk? It does have a slightly more complex plot than say the recent (also convict killing for TV ratings) Death Race and it tries to be a bit more political without squarely hitting the mark but essentially it’s a more complicated version of Running Man with the hero pretending not to have a Scottish accent rather than pretending not to have an Austrian accent, a less linear plot and a more exploratory approach to camera movement and colour pallet.

Above average brutality and in your face blood letting, even by modern action film standards!

The film has holes in its premise, in its execution and its plot. When the plot does try to bring the film along it is submerged beneath loud and incomprehensible action and violence. Okay if you are really drunk and feeling anti-social.

  • Waste of my time, especially as disk was scratched and ending didn't play.

Would give it no stars if I could. I was expecting this to be similar to Death Race, given the description. Could have warned us there is a Sims like theme in the movie too. If I wanted to see topless women and a naked fat man I would have rented a different film. Very disappointing. Also cannot skip the trailers before the film.

ok so I have decided in my infinite wisdom to review every single film i have ever seen on love film... Currently still on the letter 'A'... So Gamer.... Well it's a decent film and a fine Gerard Butler vehicle. there are some clever concepts and ideas and the story has a good arc... the acting is good and the action is fast paced and brutal.... The violence is a bit over the top...and the squeamish need not apply... over all a good beer and pizza movie and a worrying hint of what may lie ahead

I've given this three and a half stars. As an action movie, it's entertaining, ticks several boxes, and it moves at a fair pace so is never tedious or dull.

I expected an action-fest, but I got a lot of satire & social commentary into the bargain too which I thoroughly enjoyed & can only hope that it isn't lost on more people. It's a pity the movie didn't dive deeper into some of the above, but it wasn't the core of the story, more a backdrop to set the scene as the movie speeds forward.

Butler is good, although some of the supporting actors are little more than window-dressing. But the star of the show for me has to be Michael C Hall's (aka 'Castle') performance. He isn't in a great deal of the film, yet when he does he steals it.

Obviously rented this because Gerard Butler is in it (!), and although not my favourite film of his, it was quite interesting and entertaining. Storyline not the best, but overall, worth a watch, especially if you are a fan!
