An absolute masterpiece. If I could have given this movie an eleven, I would have wanted to give it a twelve. Ben Kingsley didn't just play the role of Gandhi, he WAS Gandhi. The sheer magnitude of the funeral scene is enough to send shivers up and down your spine. Gandhi is one of essential movies that will stand the test of time. Future generations will hardly believe that the movie is a work of non-fiction, and that such a man ever walked this planet. 10 - 10- Was this review helpful to you?

A triumph for all concerned: camera, actors and actresses, music; authentic look for indoors and outdoors; evocative scenes of Native Indian and British Indian life. Excellent script. Fantastic Film about Gandhi
By a customer , 09 Oct 2012Fantastic film. Ben Kingsley plays a fantastic part as Gandhi and the supporting cast are all really great actors and actresses. A long epic film which explores the background to his later life, then his life in the Indian Congress Party, shows his world status and his death.

Long but beautiful, moving and compelling

Long but beautiful, moving and compelling film in which sees some excellent acting following the later life of Gandhi in which Ben Kingsley gets better as his character gets older.
Star-filled support too despite little screen time for most of them with Edward Fox’s despicable General Dyer being my standout although a mention too for the excellent Roshan Seth.
It’s beautifully shot and feels very real with its violent clashes, thousands of extras (before CGI was used for that sort of thing) and doesn’t drag despite its three hour running time.- Was this review helpful to you?

Great movie

...a man who made humility and simple truth more powerful than empires.' And Albert Einstein added,
'Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth.'
BOURKE-WHITE: But do you really believe you could use non-violence against someone like Hitler?
GANDHI (a thoughtful pause): Not without defeats and great pain. (He looks at her.) But are there no defeats in this war
– no pain? (For a moment the thought hangs, and then Gandhi takes their hands
back to the spinning.) What you cannot do is accept injustice. From Hitler – or anyone. You must make the injustice visible – be prepared to die like a soldier to do so.
GANDHI: But I know happiness does not come with things – even twentieth century things. It can come from work, and pride in what you do. (He looks at her steadily.) It will not necessarily be 'progress' for India if she simply imports the unhappiness of the West.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good history
By a customer , 14 Dec 2011After visiting India, I wanted to learn more about its recent history. This film helped me. I compare it with Lawrence (of Arabia) in that it seems reasonably accurate, but glamorises the subject a bit. I suppose all films do this.- Was this review helpful to you?
