A superb performance
By a customer from Bedford, England , 18 Sep 2003[Highly rated reviewer]
Daniel Day Lewis comes onto our screens about once in every three years. It is as though he prepares himself for the role, for that entire time, and the performances that he leaves us with just get better and better. The man is a genius and his portrayal of William Cutting, affectionately known as ?The Butcher? is nothing short of terrifying.
Gangs of New York is a raw, unforgiving look at the ?salad bowl? rather than the ?melting pot? that was New York during the American Civil War. The Butcher is the self-styled king of five points, New York. He leads ?the natives? brutally against the Irish and Black immigrants, flooding into New York every week.
The film opens with some of the best cinematography since [Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon] and [Road to Perdition]. Sublime editing, a great mixture of camera lenses and angles, plus the perennial slow motion fight sequences all help grab the viewer?s attention from the opening credits.
Leonardo DiCaprio has been at war with the critics regarding his acting ability since he ?sold out? to Titanic. As Amsterdam, he plays the young vengeful orphan well. If anything, the script should have defined his character better, but DiCaprio gives everything he can, with the role provided.
Scorsese has done it again with Gangs of New York and it was a touch of genius casting Cameron Diaz as Jenny.
If you liked Gangs of New York then you may also like to hire [In The Name of The Father], [Last of the Mohicans] and [Titanic].- Was this review helpful to you?

(425)LOVE IT. GOLDEN PIECE OF FILM.
By WC (11 reviews) , 01 Mar 2013I saw this film about 7 years ago... When I was about 10... I know, a bit young for a Scorsese piece but what can I say, I'm a fan of ol' Marty. When I saw it back then, I didn't understand most of it... I saw it recently with a friend and I LOVED it.- Was this review helpful to you?

Not sure what that was all about
By a customer , 28 Feb 2013Got really bored and never finished the film - not sure what it was all about - some great actors in the film, but without a good story that i could follow the film just didn't make any sense. it may have done if i'd have finished it, so perhaps my loss.- Was this review helpful to you?

Curiously Unsatisfying
By AQuietHero (13 reviews) from Brighton , 19 Dec 2012[Highly rated reviewer]
It's hard to tell where Gangs of New York goes wrong. Or rather, it's hard to tell why it fails to get it right.
This is a decent film. It's got a strong cast who all perform well; it's beautifully produced and shot - although some shots feel a touch dated already. The costumes, set and special effects are wonderful. The sense of atmosphere is spot on. The era of history is fascinating, and is captured convincingly (I couldn't comment on accuracy, but it's believable - which is enough for a movie of this nature).
And yet... somehow it misses its mark. Where it should be fantastic, it's just quite good. Alright. Enjoyable. Perhaps it's because of the frenetic pace at which the two-and-a-half hour epic flies through its twisted story. Perhaps the story flatters deceive, being both over-complicated and, in the end, far too simple. Perhaps I missed a beat or two, or perhaps the more emotionally charged scenes (of which are are many) somehow fail to engage.
The result is a film which sort of passed me by - never fully gripping my attention, but more or less maintaining my concentration. I think, in the end, the historical context, atmosphere, and sense of place are what make the film stand out - while the personal stories which are woven into the historical narrative contrive to miss their mark.
I will say this for sure: Daniel Day Lewis is EXCELLENT, but still pales in comparison to Ian McShane's portrayal of Al Swearengen in Deadwood.- Was this review helpful to you?

So dull I couldn't make it to the end of the film.
By rne02 (25 reviews) , 30 Oct 2012Things started off pretty well with a large fight to kick the movie off. After that it was pretty much down hill.
After two hours of trying to stay awake, and looking like there was going to be no end in sight (there was actually another three quarters of an hour to go) i gave up and turned it off and went to bed.
One of the dullest films I have ever watched, un-necessarily long and other than Daniel Day-Lewis turning in a trade mark superb performance it has nothing going for it.- Was this review helpful to you?
