An almighty cast but sadly Gangster Squad is still underwhelming.

Average name...far from average film.

Amazing film! Cast are great, full of action and the occasional comedy moments work well too. One of the best films I've seen in a long time. Despite the pretty poor name, if you love gangster films you won't be disappointed!- Was this review helpful to you?

Pretty poor film
By uniqueness (77 reviews) from Glasgow , 15 Apr 2013Suprisingly average gangster flick. There was a lot of anticipation for this film, including myself. And with the big stars appearing in it, it promised a lot. However, it's no different to anything like this that has been released in recent years. Moreso, it is actually slightly dull, and the storyline drags on a little. Theres some terrific scenes, but thats all that it is good for. One good 10 minute scene, then 20 mins of dragging plot, it doesn't add up for me. And i left rather disapointed. I think if your really into Gangster flicks then this is probably going to be right up your street. It did remind me of the Untouchables, but when i first watched that years ago i was left inspired. This doesn't do that. Infact all it did do for me was give me cramp trying to sit comfortably enough to watch it's long length.- Was this review helpful to you?

Good LA gangster fare
By Bobsview (554 reviews) from Gloucestershire , 04 Feb 2013Violent hard hitting story set in the late 1940s Los Angeles. Sean Penn steals the show as the evil gangster leader Micky cohen. Ryan Gosling superb as goodie police detective, and Emma Stone terrific as Cohens squeeze. Not for the squeamish. It is good and watchable, and entertaining. The cars and sets are wonderful. But there is too much gratuitous violence and the relentless machine guns make it like watching a video game.- Was this review helpful to you?

Crazy crime boss Sean sent to the Penn
By blackpolekev (204 reviews) from blackpole , 02 Feb 2013Sean Penn hams it up as the psychotic crime boss Mickey Cohen who plans to rule 1940s Los Angeles. Square jawed Sergeant O'Mara (Josh Brolin) assembles a team of detectives to stop him. This is inspired by actual events although it's impossible to know just how true it is. Despite a very impressive cast list, I have to agree exactly with Love-film's own review above: the end product is still underwhelming.

Untouchables 2
By manonfireuk (301 reviews) from Liverpool , 21 Jan 2013I really enjoyed this film, it was like The Untouchables only with a couple of thousand more bullets fired and a couple of hundred more punches thrown. How close this is to the actual true story is debatable, Sean Penn at times seems to be a bit over the top with his snarling angry face but maybe Mickey Cohen really loved to snarl! The cast fit well with the movie and it was a really enjoyable gangster flick.- Was this review helpful to you?
