This loose rehash of The Treasure of the Sierra Madre squanders its cast and devotes its energies to capturing the scenery with the new CinemaScope lens. The script has Susan Hayward convincing adventurers Gary Cooper and Richard Widmark that “there's gold in them thar hills” — as well as a husband buried in the mine they're seeking. Indian attacks impede their progress and their return, while Hayward makes the chaps break out in sweaty rivalry. A western that searches for biblical parallels, to no avail.

High-flying Western melodrama with the principals glowering at each other. Stock situations quite skilfully compiled.

    Misguided western

Too much scowling and glowering in this interesting but misguided western in which the director Hathaway builds to a simmering anticlimax. Ex- sheriff Cooper and gambler Widmark team up to rescue a woman's husband from a mine, only to be trapped by an indian attack. Hayward projects her usual sensuality. The score is excellent.
