    [Highly rated reviewer]

Gauntlet games have been around for years and spanned many formats, and very little has changed since the original for Dark Legacy. Of course, it's now in 3D but it's still the same basic idea.

Work your way through several differently themed worlds to recover shards of a sacred window that will allow you access to the big bad guy's home. Along the way you also need to find twelve missing runestones to help you proceed, coloured crystals and golden icons to unlock levels and powerful items to help beat the massive bosses.

You start with a choice of 8 playable characters including the original 4, warrior, valkyrie, wizard and archer and 4 new classes, Sorceress, Knight, Jester and Dwarf. Each character has 4 different appearances based on the colour you choose. There are even more more characters to unlock as you work your way through. As you fight you earn experience and improve your stats, but every ten levels you get a new appearance, eventually gain a familiar and get new abilities (potions restore health or turn junk into gold for example.) Each class also has its own strengths and weaknesses such as the warrior who starts with high strength, but low speed.

This game truly comes into it's own when playing with up to 3 friends for multiplayer co-operative action. One of few of it's type on PS2 and doubtlessly one of the best.

The game's only real downfall is it's repetitiveness. Whilst it's still fun looking for hidden items and levelling up later in the game, you're still just fighting your way through crowds of bad guys in much the same matter as you did on the first level.

All in all, a brilliant game well worth your time and effort.
