When Peter Gabriel left Genesis in 1975 the critics and many fans thought that was the end.
This DVD shows that they still had plenty of good songs left in them.
As with most compilations whether it?s a CD or DVD you tend to get the good, the bad & the ugly & this DVD is no exception.
The tracks after 1983 seem to be commercial dross.
The last few tracks on the DVD are recent tracks without Phil Collins, they have flash looking & expensive videos nevertheless it is quite clear the songs are not up to par & the band are well past their sell by date.
Other calamities include Jesus He Knows Me, No Son Of Mine and throwing it all away.
Admittedly the tracks Land Of Confusion & I Can?t Dance have good videos but it?s the earlier tracks which are the gems in this collection.
Their 1983 hit Mama sounds as good as ever although the video looks suspiciously grainy.
Keep It Dark (1981) is another goody, with Mr. Collins, Banks & Rutherfold walking by the canals of Amsterdam & through the Dutch countryside. The promo to this works very well and is a pleasure to watch.
The sound track on this is excellent and is generally very good the whole duration of the disc.
Abacab is ok as is Paperlate which has been taken from the BBCs Top Of The Pops and overdubbed with a decent soundtrack.
The further we go back in time the better the songs become, Follow You, Follow Me (1978) still sounds magnificent debatably their best single.
The track A Trick Of The Tail is a good song but the video has an unusual appearance, it seems like it?s been shot by American TV who have an inferior format to the European ?PAL? standard and the video has a kind of jerky effect, like there are frames missing.
As for first prize it without doubt goes to the wonderfully melodic masterpiece Ripples from 1976.
This is Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford and Tony Banks at their best.
At this stage Steve Hackett is still in the band.
It?s 8 minutes long but there is nothing, especially the later tracks which even comes close to matching the sheer quality.
The soundtrack which is almost 30 years old sounds great and the video which is a simple ?in studio? promo is perfectly filmed, crystal clear and every detail is perfection from the lighting to the camera work.
For Phil Collins and Genesis fans this is a must see DVD, the 1976-1983 songs are especially fabulous.
For other music fans this DVD I certainly recommend.
All the Genesis video's are here - even the ones you'd prefer to forget. This is worth seeing for Land of Confusion & Carpet Crawlers 99 (the only song to have Peter Gabriel in it). The rest of the videos are looking a bit dated now but still, for fans of the band, it's a must see.
