Gentlemen Prefer Blondes

What a pairing! Monroe is outstanding as Loreli, the manipulating and idulgent vixen. Russell is wonderful as Dorothy, trying to keep her Diamond loving friend out of trouble. Much of this film is tongue in cheek and is cleverly casted. The songs are a great contrast in looks and sounds of two great actresses. Timeless

It's worth seeing, just for 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend', but Marilyn's character is such a shameless, heartless gold-digger that it's really hard to like her or to understand why Jane Russell's character sticks by her. Also, the songs are pretty forgettable apart from Diamonds. (I can see why Madonna liked it so much.) Not a patch on 'Some like it Hot', for Marilyn at her best, but 'Gentlemen' does at least contain one of her best lines: “I can be smart when it’s important, but most men don’t like it”.

This film is quintessential viewing to seeing two screen goddesses together - Jane Russell and Marilyn Monroe are two best friends who charm and sing their way into mens' hearts, and in Monroe's case, their pockets.

You got to love Russell's Dorothy for falling in love the traditional way but Monroe steals the show in the iconic 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' sequence.

Not one of the more recognised musicals, but good fun nonetheless.

Gentlemen prefer blondes is a putative musical that introduced the world to the anthemic 'Diamonds are a girls best friend'. And indeed, the songs and set pieces are spectacular. But as much as these it is the musicality of the dialogue (there are after all only a few songs and they do not develop the plot) that invests this movie with the same playful spirit and invigorating verbal wit as that other Hawks classic 'His Girl Friday'.

Never too pleased with itself, showing off in the manner of so many musicals, GPB merely presents itself as an entertainment to be fleetingly enjoyed. Nevertheless it still ripples through popular culture (see Munroe's performance of 'Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend' and be reminded of Madonna's 'Material Girl' video) and it's restraint and good taste make it timeless. And it's still riotously funny.

A brief word too for Jane Russell, often overlooked as this movie marks something like the beginning of the Munroe cult. For those who prefer their women more feisty than demure, she may be half as glamorous as Marilyn but she's twice as sexy.
