Old fashioned style.

A study of power and wisdom as old Caesar coaches the very young Cleopatra to make her queen of Egypt. GBS's script is enchanting; witty, amusing and thought provoking. Alec Guiness is at his best as the seasoned soldier and politician faced with the fascinating, childlike and casually cruel Cleopatra. His cold clear logic cuts through her flights of wild imagination and vindictiveness, but they are both single minded in achieving their aims.
The staging is ultra simple and probably rather sad to youngsters today who expect sound and fury and special effects, of which there are none: no sex, no on screen violence. Just words to think about. I watched it twice and may have to buy it.- Was this review helpful to you?
