What an unexpected pleasure this was. from the quality of the picture and sound to the opera itself. Eventhe outtakes and piece on glydbourne gardens ere gems in themselves. Perfect.- Was this review helpful to you?

(3)A Von Otter and Glynbourne triumph
By risky (102 reviews) from Ashby de la zouch , 16 Apr 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
I do not agree with the review about Glynbourne being to small for Carmen. I have seen Carmen performed live at the Verona arena and the stage being huge everything including horses were used. However a lot was lost due to the performance being in the open air. At Glynbourne a more intimate performance with a better sound being produced was achieved. I had thought that Anne Sophie Von Otter would not make a good Carmen being not Spanish looking enough, but she was brilliant being the most seductive I have seen. The staging and costumes could not be faulted, and the whole opera was a triumph for all concerned. Not to be missed.- Was this review helpful to you?

Clastrophobic Carmen
By CatherineAnne (53 reviews) from Harrogate, Yorkshire, England , 10 Aug 2010I know that the Glynebourne stage is not the biggest, but this appeared too small for the production, particularly in the first act. The scenery was squashed in so that the singers hardly had room to move. I know the girls were all meant to be cigarette girls, but was the amount of smoke really necessary? Carmen even appeared to be smoking a cigar at one point. I can only suppose that the smoke accounted for the croakiness in the voices of Carmen and Don Jose. Maybe the production was sponsored by a tobacco company?
Carmen was suitably seductive in the first act, but the stage presence tailed off towards the end. The ending was something of an anticlimax. Sorry David, not one of your best!- Was this review helpful to you?
