Truly an Opera and a Great One

Gershwin plumbs the depths of true opera here: the 'hit' songs are linked by much music for recitative and mood music which is masterful and creates a whole seamless piece of music-drama. Trevor Nunn effects a successful compromise between the freedom of film and the confines of a stage which, with soft colour and wonderful lighting, has atmosphere and a vibrant feel. Great picture and sound but unfortunately they do not match very well.
