I was given the first Get Backers DVD as a present some years ago, and really liked it, but given the high price of anime to buy was reluctant to indulge myself without knowing if I'd like the rest of the series. I've now watched it all, courtesy of LoveFilm, and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's pure fantasy, of course, but there's a wonderful focus on loyalty, the wise use of personal abilities, and the redeeming power of friendship that's a delight to see. Volume 10 marks the end of the series, and it's very satisfying, pulling all the sub-plots and mini-arcs together into a terrific feel-good finale.
I have to confess I could have lived without some of the fights, which dragged a bit, but that's in the nature of this sort of anime: you put up with it in order to enjoy the fun of the rest. As anime goes, Get Backers has to be one of my favourites. Even if I don't get the entire series, I HAVE to have the last volume - and vol eight, which has one of the funniest episodes I've ever seen in any anime: had me laughing aloud, and that doesn't happen often!
Altogether, recommended for anyone who likes a healthy dose of fantasy with memorable characters. Great stuff!- Was this review helpful to you?
