Covering three days of brutal military campaigns, the film re-creates the world in which Robert E. Lee, James Longstreet, Lewis Armistead, and others made their tactical decisions and demonstrated their leadership.
Special attention is paid to historical accuracy in costumes, epic battle scenes, and weaponry. The film alternates between Northern and Southern perspectives in order to deliver a full picture of the battle that changed American history.

A stirring and epic historical re-creation of the event as seen from the point of view of the commanders and their officers, concentrating on strategy as well as the actual bloody fighting; it ignores the wider causes of the war and does little to explain

This film was originally intended as a 6 part mini series, but it was then turned into a feature length movie running over 4 hours in lenth. Don't let that put you off though, it's an epic, sweeping account of the events surrounding the great battle towards the end of the American civil war, told from both sides of the battlefield. It forms part of a trilogy along with the also excellent 'Gods & Generals' and the as yet produced third installment. It has everything, realism, tension, drama, excitement, even education! The cast, including Martin Sheen, Tom Berenger, Jeff Daniels and C Thomas Howell are all terrific (especially Daniels), and the 4 or so hours seem to fly by. Anyone with a passing interest in the civil war or even just a great war movie will love it. Recommended!
We were glued to this from start to finish. Quite 'wordy' in places, and at times Sheen (Lee) sounds like he is delivering a speech in front of an audience instead of talking to one man.
Very well made, both picture and sound are stunning.
The battle scenes are scary, would you fancy standing a few feet apart in lines delivering shot after shot into the opposition lines while they fire back at you?
The only minor difficulty was not knowing the geography of Gettysburg, however there are maps of the battle field in the extras on the disc.
Overall an excellent film, well worth the time spent watching it.
C. Thomas Howell is to direct and star in a new film version of dinosaur adventure The Land That Time Forgot. The Gettysburg star will be joined by Timothy Bottoms in the project, based on Tarzan author Edgar Rice Burroughs' adventure story - according to MovieHole.net. The tale was originally turned into a movie in 1975 and starred Doug McClure and Susan Penhaligan. Read more
