It's so good that it shows how good the even-better "Canary" was
By roncoach (365 reviews) from suffolk , 22 May 2011[Highly rated reviewer]
Not quite as good as The Cat and The Canary but who cares? It's good enough to stand alone without comparisons.
It's the same story ( and some of the same jokes LOL) but in a slightly different setting. It's just so funny. Bob Hope must surely have been one of our greatest exports to the USA. He was a 'one-off' comic genius.
He seems , in spite of his 'non-matinee idol' looks to find a certain chemistry with most of his leading ladies ----and the beautiful Paulette Goddard is no exception : she is always a joy to watch ( oh why did she not get the part of Scarlett in Gone Withe Wind ?).
A fun film that will delight audiences for very many years to come.- Was this review helpful to you?

By escapedtaxman (7 reviews) , 15 Nov 2011A short film, watch it with the sound turned up - or you'll miss the one-liners. And remember just how old this is - see how many subsequent films have borrowed from it!- Was this review helpful to you?

Fun with ghosties and ghouls
By Donensian (100 reviews) from Doncaster , 15 Oct 2010A 1940 comedy platform for a wisecracking Bob Hope as Lawrence Lawrence, a detective, and the delicious Paulette Goddard a lady who inherits a castle on an island in the West Indies. Willie Best as Alex a stereotypical eye rolling, lip trembling black comedy foil which tends to jar a little in these days of political correctness. Paul Lukas, always a suave villainous type and Richard Carlson and Anthony Quinn fill out the cast list. A follow up to 'The Cat & the Canary' there are lots of laughs with ghosts and zombies, if you make allowance for the era in which it was made.- Was this review helpful to you?

Fine Follow Up To Cat and The Canary
By MrGiles2 (62 reviews) from Middlesbrough , 20 Jan 2010This is a fine comedy film best suited to the wisecracks for which Bob Hope was best remembered. Similar storyline to the previous outing between Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard (who was married to Charlie Chaplin at the time) the action takes place around a spooky mansion on a caribbean island near Cuba. Good set pieces, great one liners (listen to the one by Bob Hope who says during a terrible storm: 'Basil Rathbone must be giving a party tonight.') A fine comedy and worth seeing even though it is a little dated. Remade in 1953 as a Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin farce 'Scared Stiff' which follows almost the same script. Great for midweek viewing.- Was this review helpful to you?
