THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

Volume Three of Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex kicks off with an entire episode in a virtual chatroom. Watching an avatar of the Major sitting around chatting for 20 minutes doesn't sound too entertaining, but it does give a quick recap of what we know about the Laughing Man so far, as well as provide a bit of new information. Hardly essential viewing, but not as dull as it could have been.

The second episode on this disc is the most disturbing of the series, dealing with a serial killer who flays his victims alive with a connection to Batou's past. This is another stand alone episode that actually stands apart from the rest and justifies its inclusion, despite diverting from the shows main plot. It is also the first episode to focus on Batou.

In the third episode, Togusa goes undercover in a home for people suffering from a rare cyberbrain condition. Whilst there he uncovers more information about The Laughing Man.

The fourth episode focuses on one of the many artificially intelligent tanks that Section 9 uses. It's possibly the dullest episode of the entire series.

One thing about this show is that for no apparent reason at all it just completely ignores the big mystery and throw you an episode that no one really cares about. This disc is a big step backwards from the improvement of Volume Two.

  • Batou is even more complicated than you think

I've been watching the GITS SAC series in order and think that episode 1 of vol.3 is probably the best so far. Very dark and quite gruesome compared to previous episodes and it was the 1st time that i really started to consider batou as the main character of the whole series. He really is a complex man/robot/cyborg. Obviously part of team, yet he operates to his own agenda and doesn't seem to be able to be swayed from what he considers to be the right thing to do. It feels odd to like and admire him but i guess this is the skill of the whole GITS committee coming through in the way they construct these episodes. PS the tachikoma 'extra' at the end of epsiode 1 of vol 3 is great (you are watching right to the end of the credits and realise there are these gorgeous little tachikoma re-enactments at the end...right?!?!?!)

I hope they are not decommissioned!

this series doesn't seem to take off at all, with a script that sounds like a cross between dawsons creek and star trek (with a bit of matrix revoloutions thrown in) it can't really contend with it's origins. it is watchable, but won't get your pulse going
