A note of clarification for anyone renting this DVD set from Amazon. Despite what they have named the separate DVDs, BOTH DISCS 1 AND 2 CONTAIN ALL 4 EPISODES. Disc 1 has DD 2.0 English and Japanese Stereo soundtracks, while disc 2 has DTS 5.1 English and Japanese and DD 2.0 English soundtracks. You will therefore only need to rent the relevant one for your audio set-up.

THIS REVIEW CONTAINS SPOILERS Show review anywayHide

On previous volumes, I have expressed my annoyance at the amount of episodes in this series that bear absolutely no relation the greater plot that I felt should have been the primary focus.

Sure it's nice to get to know the other characters, but couldn't they have done that whilst advancing the plot instead of taking so many breaks from the main plot to give you stories that you really don't care all that much about?

Volume 4 is the worst culprit for this, with episodes dealing with cyber-terrorism, protecting an eccentric mathematician from assassination, the decommissioning of the Tachikoma's, and Batou spying on one of his heroes. You'll notice that not one of these four episodes has any mention of The Laughing Man.

The episodes aren't all bad, and the animation and voice acting is as fantastic as usual. But this volume ultimately does not progress the overall story one bit.
