Spectacular-looking Japanese animated film, but one that, like so many of its kind, involves a confusing narrative and peculiar metaphysics that reduce interest in its depiction of a corrupt future.
"...Richly imagined....Slick and visually dazzling..."
"...A knockout vision of a machine-run cityscape..."
I stopped watching after a few minutes, hated it. If this is the best Anime has to offer, I guess it's just not for me. The frame rate, for starters, was shockingly low! What was that, 5 frames per second??? It gave me headaches straight away! The animation has a few short good moments at important bits where they took extra care but is generally poor, no matter how you put it (unless, maybe, if you measure it against other cr*p Anime)!!! The other problem was the language; I just couldn't get into it with Japanese (I tried) and the American voices are laughable because the acting is so terrible! All this made me withdraw from the action and I was having to make a huge effort to understand what was going on so I just stopped wasting my time and sent it back.
This was one of the most original storys and the most ripped off idea! When watching this please remember this was released 10-15 years before the MATRIX and as you can see Matrix has ripped off many suttle ideas from this story!!!
I think most Manga I've seen is pretty much the same, brilliant visuals but lacking in dialogue or plot terms. This one which I saw for the first time seven years after it's release is a piece of art in Manga terms. A plot to make you think, characters who are not one-dimensional and a few great blasts of action. The chapter where all she does is just walk through the city with the chanty chinese music in the background is hauntingly beautiful and the sort of thing you just don't expect to see in Manga films. P.s. watch it with the subtitles, I think it gives it more depth and takes away the cheesy voice-overs which are always a major minus point for Jap-animation.
This was my first Manga experience, and I'm certainly glad to have chosen such a great introduction. Boasting an intelligent sci-fi story line, Ghost in the Shell hits all the buttons. Matrix lovers will love it too. Excellent visuals are combined with characters with real depth. Some other reviewers recommend switching on the English sub-titles as well. I would concur with this - it certainly adds another dimension, and it's especially fun where the English dubbing and English subtitles don't precisely match up! Can't wait to rent some of the others...
There?s a bit too much pseudo, philosophical and scientific mumbo-jumbo in the script to rate it as highly as the recent and very magical ?Spirited Away?. Yet the level of animation in this film can only be described as a work of art; it uses the new digital techniques in a totally different way to ?Pixar?. The Music is also a bit special, and not just the closing theme by Eno and U2. One other thing, I noticed that this movie was made in 1995. So that?s where the Wachowski brothers got all their ideas!!

The thing about Ghost in the Shell is that this is a film as successful as it is ambitious. Many have compared the film to the Matrix (or rather The Matrix to it) and the comparison is justified if only in both films attempts to push ideas of technological advancement within the realm of science fiction to a point where fantasy meets reality and the lines blur. However, where The Matrix stops fantasising about electronic evolution to give way to unimaginable action sequences, Ghost in the Shell only grows denser and denser, building towards its foresight-defying conclusion, to the point where we are left pondering where mans ever-improving experimentation with machines will take us, and even matters of humanity and life itself. The DVD comes with a glossary of terms and facts which is embarrassingly necessary in getting the most from the film. Ghost in the Shell was years ahead of its time in both ambition and animation. One on Mangas finest thought-provoking and unmissable.
Really one of the great anime films made - thoughtful, artful and supplying the action so required of many of these types of films. You feel you are watching something aimed at adults like Akira and it's amazing that it's reaching a decade old and few anime have touched it's greatness. A must see for anime fans.
If you're planning to watch this movie, you really must watch it with the Japanese soundtrack and English subtitles, not to be 'cool' but because you'll get a much truer idea of the storyline. Watch the first three minutes of the dubbed version and then skip to the subtitles, and you'll see what I mean.
Anyway, as a non-Manga expert I enjoyed this because the storyline is engrossing and thoughtful, the art is beautiful and it's a completely contrast to most western movies, whether Pixar or art house. If you want to dip into Manga, as I did, this is a good starting point. But you do have to concentrate to follow the plot. Is that a problem?
Introduced first to the wonderful world of anime (Japanese animation) a few years ago in the form of "The Bubblegum Conspiracy" and this, "Ghost In The Shell", I was hooked solidly right from the start. Gone were the cutesy-poo characters of Disney. In their place was the awesome adult science fiction, horror, comedy and fantasy of the Far East. I watched "Ghost In The Shell" with mouth open at the sheer brilliance of the animation, and the wilderness of the imagination that went into this film, making it (rightly so) the pinnacle of anime in the past few years. Once you acept the subtle and not-so-subtle differences in cultures between east and west, this offers you the best!
With more than a taste of "Bladerunner" to it, "Ghost In The Shell" explores the possibilities and potential disasters that could face a world where androids are everyday objects.
So let your sense of disbelief go, sit back, rev up your senses, and revel in "The Ghost In The Shell".
Possibly one of the best sci-fi anime movies out there. Traditional cel animation mixed seamlessly with CGI sequences puts you into a world of hi-tech action and suspense. However the movie is not just about cyborgs and mastermind criminals, its a classic theme of the search for oneself, masterfully retold in a thought provoking and artistic style.
Inspired the making of the tv series, Stand Alone Complex, and the soon-to-be-released movie sequel.
A mixture of Cel and CGI animation, this movie is beautifully made, if you are new to Manga or have still not seen this film, you HAVE to watch it. It contains everything you want in a Manga movie, great action scenes, high tech weaponry and a gorgeous leading lady!
