Director Steve Beck follows up his good-looking fiasco Thir13en Ghosts with another horror that favours style over substance. A hackneyed and unsophisticated morality tale — where greed is inevitably rewarded with tragedy — it revolves around skipper Gabriel Byrne and his salvage team who think they've struck gold when they discover a mysterious, loot-filled cruise liner that's been lost at sea since the 1960s. In fairness, this grisly take on the Marie Celeste legend opens promisingly with an outrageously bloody effects-explosion that defines the mood with a jugular-grabbing jolt. Unfortunately, the ineffectual performances (particularly from an unconvincing Julianna Margulies) and threadbare plot effectively eliminate further tension. Beck desperately replays his key gory moment in an attempt to keep the action afloat, but, instead of providing a lifeline, this simply emphasises what turgid nonsense the rest of the movie really is.

    Suprisingly good

I'm not much one for ghost films but this was great entertainment.

Captain Sean Murphy and his salvage crew are given an opportunity to investigate a sighting of a seemingly abandoned ship in the Bering Sea. But when they actually find it, something far more horrific and deadly than they have ever encountered before, awaits them.

Good special effects and very freaky sequences along with a decent plot. When you first put this on you wonder if the discs have got muddled up and thats its some romantic sixties film. It doesn't take long before the story starts to emerge.

Flawed and predictable, I liked it!

A lot of horror fans don't think too highly of this film, but I quite enjoyed my time on the Ghost Ship. Maybe there's nothing too original or ground-breaking about the type of horror it has to offer, but that doesn't mean it's not effective and entertaining.

I think I can safely say that the opening scene of the movie is rather unforgettable, and I greatly admire the effect the movie makers were going for here. Rarely does a movie purport to take out untold scores of people with one swift blow, and it is most unfortunate that a lack of commitment to this potentially extraordinary scene sets in motion the very doubts and misgivings some viewers have of the real meat of the story.

The method of mass execution used in this first scene is pretty hard to accept scientifically, but the real problem comes in the form of some very obvious mannequins lying among the "dead." The filmmakers try to salvage the scene by having the victims take a few moments to figure out that they are quite dead, and that works for me; unfortunately, they take this too far and end up making what should be a glorious bloodbath look a little silly.

I'm not saying Ghost Ship does not have its faults and weaknesses, but in my opinion it made for an entertaining albeit rather predictable little horror movie.

    HIRE THIS FILM!,

...but only watch the first 5 minutes. What an opening scene! tremendous gore! And there's an original, clever little 'game' to play on the DVD extras.

That is what the 2 stars are for, because the rest of the film is b0ll0cks.

    Very Disappointing

I expected more from this film.

It starts of well with a suitably horrific (if improbable) opening scene but then Deteriorates quickly. There are no real scares or thrills and the only redeeming feature is the atmospheric soundtrack.

A shame, the potential just wasn't fulfilled

A watchable film that has some good effects and a decent bit of gore but overall, not particularly spooky. It seems to have heavily borrowed many different of other films of the 'scary movie' genre and therefore feels a bit over familiar and predictable. You won't absolutely love it but you won't absolutely hate it either!

About As Scary As a Large Bowl Of Custard

A few moments of gore cannot make up for the distinctly average thrills dished out by this movie. It's biggest problem is that is just isn't scary enough - a major flaw in a ghost story in my book. Average effects, boring characters. Waste of time I'm afraid - and this is the only time I was afraid!!!

Thoroughly enjoyed this film from beginning to end.

Superb special effects, realistic characters and chilling storyline. I don't want to say too much, as to do so would spoil it for those of you who have yet to see this film, but I will say that the ending was a refreshing change from the norm.

This is one that my fiance and I will most definitely be purchasing for our horror collection......

    Drip Ship

We’ve been here many times before; the darkened corridor; the creaking staircase; the rat infested cellar; the empty warehouse, creeping towards the good old ‘shock shot’ or non ‘shock shot as the case may be. This time it’s below decks with the creepy water reflections, the drip, drip of off screen water and the sub Bernard Hermann score edging us along for the anti-climatic non ‘shock shot’.

To off-set this standard formula the makers have invested heavily in the opening sequence involving mass murder with wire cable. Killing lots of people is not the point here. If the Special Effects crew can pull it off in most gruesome way possible it’s in the film it’s in the film no matter how absurd and illogical the sequence is. If we blinked it’s repeated a few times - and in slow-mo. The rest of the film is an anti-climax and of course we can’t have an ending these days without the obligatory ridiculous twist.

    Disappointing

The film promises much and delivers very little. It has an extremely weak plot line, very predictable and for some crazy reason they think at the end we would want to see a sequel! Quite disappointing.

This horror film has a few truly nasty scenes in it but on the whole it's not too gory! A salvage ship crew go onboard a ship lost at sea for decades to find i'ts not as empty as they hoped, it's quite like Event Horizon in that the main characters aren't sure if what they see is real for a while and of course they get picked off one by one, if you like horror this is well made but not a classic.
