    [Highly rated reviewer]

A group of elderly gentlemen in their New England hometown have formed a group called 'The Chowder Society'. Together, they spend their evenings telling ghost stories to one another. However, they begin to experience an actual ghost who wants revenge. The members of the group start dying in mysterious ways, as does the son of one member, who falls to his death after seeing his new bride's face as she really is. His brother attempts to prevent any more deaths. As the story progresses, the audience learns more about the mysterious woman and her relationship with The Chowder Society members.

When I first saw this movie on its initial release I was very impressed by it. But then, I was much younger than I am now.

So, how does it fare today. Actually, it is still very good and holds the atmosphere of the story a lot more than many of todays so-called, quick edit supernatural movies. In fact, this is a curl up with a mug of cocoa in a cosy darkened room film.

The cast, made up mainly of acting stallwarts Fred Astaire, John Houseman, Melvyn Douglas and Douglas Fairbanks Jr is completed with the addition of Alice Krige as the socialite tease who causes friction between a group of well to do young american men .

Events take a sinister turn when, during one rowdy escapade, an argument ensues and the woman at the centre of events is believed killed when one of the group lashes out at her.

Believing that it i9s best to cover things up, the group places her body in a car which is then dumped in the local frozen lake. Unfortunately, as the car sinks, the woman regains consciousness and the group witness her real death through the rear window of the car as she struggles to escape.

Many years later strange enents begin to take place in the town where this crime happened and is it really her spirit that has returned for revenge ?

This is a very good adaptation of a complicated novel by Peter Straub and one that captures the atmosphere of the tale. Due mainly to some excellent set design and direction.

Give this a chance and you will be rewarded in more ways than you would by many of the modern entries into the horror genre.
