Ghostbusters

When Dr. Peter Venkman (Bill Murrary) and his Columbia University colleagues (Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson) are kicked out of their prestigious academic posts, they start a private practice as professional ghost-catchers. Although the three parascientists are idle for awhile, their television advertisements finally pay off when beautiful Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) contracts them. It seems her apartment has become the entryway for ghastly ghosts and goofy ghouls hellbent on terroriSing New York City. Soon they're going to her rescue, trying to rid the city of the slimy creatures. 'Ghostbusters' hit US screens in June of 1984 and went on to become one of the most successful comedy films of all time, spawning a sequel and a popular animated series.

The often dazzling, special effects-driven slapstick tends to overshadow the fact that there are some slyer, more sophisticated laughs on offer in this blockbusting family comedy. Bill Murray is terrifically deadpan and sleazy as the dubious leader of a company of ghostbusters (writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, plus Ernie Hudson) who are called into action when ancient spirits are let loose in New York. Sigourney Weaver shows an admirably light touch as a possessed cellist, and Rick Moranis also scores in his breakthrough movie. Director Ivan Reitman stages some spectacular set pieces, including an enjoyably daft finale with a giant marshmallow man. The concept was so successful that the film spawned a cartoon series, and almost the entire team reunited for a sequel.

Crude farce with expensive special effects. It took more money Ð millions more Ð than Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which must say something about the age we live in.

If there's something strange.....in your neighbourhood

Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan based 'paranormal investigators.' When their government grants run out, they go into business as 'Ghostbusters, Inc.' Armed with electronic gadgets, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of ghouls and ghosts. William Atherton regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long dead Babylonian demon and 'channeled' through Sigourney Weaver and nerd Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious send up of every Godzilla movie ever made and it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be so mean. Ghostbusters is still a great movie and this stuff was huge in 1984 and Ray Parker Juniors theme tune is still as fantastic.

    Very Entertaining Movie

Ghostbusters has to be the best film of all time from the 80's, as a child I saw this movie 16 times at the cinema and countless times on video and dvd since. My two young children seem to enjoy the movie as much as I do myself, as so I would recomend it to any one who would like a very entertaining movie for all the family.

Very funny, slighly scary to young children, but my youngest watched it at three years old and enjoyed.

    So enjoy this movie.

    Weaver out of Ghostbusters sequel

    • 01 Jul 2009

Sigourney Weaver has pulled out of the second Ghostbusters sequel. The actress was reported to be joining former co-stars Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd in a spooky new movie, 20 years after Ghostbusters II - but she insists she isn't part of producers' plans. The actress tells TVSquad.com, "I think they're trying to create something new completely with the Ghostbusters, although I know Bill is in it. I don't expect to have anything to do with it, although I wish them well." Aykroyd has suggested Read more
