The often dazzling, special effects-driven slapstick tends to overshadow the fact that there are some slyer, more sophisticated laughs on offer in this blockbusting family comedy. Bill Murray is terrifically deadpan and sleazy as the dubious leader of a company of ghostbusters (writers Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, plus Ernie Hudson) who are called into action when ancient spirits are let loose in New York. Sigourney Weaver shows an admirably light touch as a possessed cellist, and Rick Moranis also scores in his breakthrough movie. Director Ivan Reitman stages some spectacular set pieces, including an enjoyably daft finale with a giant marshmallow man. The concept was so successful that the film spawned a cartoon series, and almost the entire team reunited for a sequel.
Crude farce with expensive special effects. It took more money Ð millions more Ð than Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, which must say something about the age we live in.
"...It's Murray's picture, as the popular comedian deadpans, ad libs and does an endearing array of physical schtick....Weaver is deliciously sexy..."
Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson star as a quartet of Manhattan based 'paranormal investigators.' When their government grants run out, they go into business as 'Ghostbusters, Inc.' Armed with electronic gadgets, the team is spectacularly successful, ridding The Big Apple of ghouls and ghosts. William Atherton regards the Ghostbusters as a bunch of charlatans, but is forced to eat his words when New York is besieged by an army of unfriendly spirits, conjured up by a long dead Babylonian demon and 'channeled' through Sigourney Weaver and nerd Rick Moranis. The climax is a glorious send up of every Godzilla movie ever made and it cost more than a year's worth of Japanese monster flicks combined. Who'd ever dream that the chubby, cheery Stay Puft Marshmallow Man would turn out to be so mean. Ghostbusters is still a great movie and this stuff was huge in 1984 and Ray Parker Juniors theme tune is still as fantastic.
I've requested that this is played on a giant projector screen at my funeral.
One of the best films from the 80s, though the sequel was not as good. Very catchy theme tune and classic timeless comedy. Great for a night in of reminiscing and laughter.
This film is a fantastic classic. I don't know anyone who has seen this and not enjoyed it. It also has the best soundtrack I have ever heard. I'm sure we all remember the school discos singing "who ya gonna call, GHOSTBUSTERS!"
Anyway due to the age of the film, the effects aren't the best but the story line is great. Fabby film, and well worth a watch.

The thing is, it's so much more than just a film. It is the way it is - a cheeky geeky gungey flick that made all of us want to drive around in an old ambulance while Bill Murray held it back from slapstick by looking a bit bored throughout.
'bustin' makes me feel good'
This is an all time classic, has great jokes and appeals to any age. Great cast including Dan Aykroyd, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray, and Harold Ramis who play great off each other. The special effects will look a little dated now thou but are funny. A must see film!!
This review may upset. Gb is a sometimes funny 80s comedy,. It came out the same times as the much superior gremlins, and too be honest does hold up against that. Some of the lines arn't funny, and there are not that many ghosts in it. I prefer GB 2. Love Miss Weaver though.
Seeing this film after 20 years was a revelation. Murray's and Ackroyd's performance are still superb and many of the jokes have survived, but the special effects and general script quality are looking tired.
Anyone who remembers loving the original will enjoy seeing it again, and anyone too young might like to see what state-of-the-art looked like in the mid-80s.
Last time I watched this I must have been ten and I knew the whole script backwards. Obviously will always be a classic but it has aged incredibly. The special effects aren't that hot anymore - not that that's important. Watch this for nostalgia; watch Ghostbusters 2 for enjoyment.
Ghostbusters has to be the best film of all time from the 80's, as a child I saw this movie 16 times at the cinema and countless times on video and dvd since. My two young children seem to enjoy the movie as much as I do myself, as so I would recomend it to any one who would like a very entertaining movie for all the family.
Very funny, slighly scary to young children, but my youngest watched it at three years old and enjoyed.
So enjoy this movie.
Being someone who was a teenager when this film came out I thought I would rent it out to watch it again but I could not get a look in as the kids loved it. I have now had to go out and buy them a copy.
But for its age it still stands up well and is very funny for adult and kids alike. I also recommend watching the directors commertry as this is nearly as funny as the film itself
