    [Highly rated reviewer]

Giulietta Masina gets off the train and finds a Rome which her director-husband seems to have fallen out of love with. Absorbed in food, festooned with bad adverts, and plagued by piles and piles of garbage, this is a city on the edge of apocalypse where the television show from hell is to take place one benighted Christmas. Masina and her old hoofing partner, Marcello Mastroianni, have been inveigled into taking part - and he she is having second thoughts (he just needs the money).

It's a love letter from Fellini to his enduring wife, and, indeed, to himself, since he has dressed Marcello up to look just like him, and it has melancholy fun at the expense of the variety entertainment polluting the television stations (just like the rubbish on the streets). The hotels are impossible and badly staffed, the night is ruled by bikers and vagrants, but there's still a little, tiny spark of magic left in some of the old-timers.

The director loses control in the second half, with far too much time given over to the show itself, but the first half sees him on top form, and the fact that he refuses to allow his stars one last moment of greatness (there's a power cut and then Marcello falls over), as Hollywood would have done, ensures that the film retains its unique flavour right through to the bitter-sweet ending.

And the documentaries on the second disc are indeed very good.

my reason for seeing this film was to witness two old troupers almost at the end of their game, Mastroianni and Masina. The theme of two performers getting together late in life to dance in front of tv audience and camera is, I believe, a subtext, a reason for seeing the film which successfully depicts the contrast of changing times with their heyday as a popular dance team. In the film, the two are remembered by older fans and this older fan will never forget either Marcello or Giuletta.

What a treat to see Guilietta Masina and Marcello Mastroionni looking and perfoming wonderfully in their sixties. Fred's character is supposed to be based on Fellini himself - and if so, it's a pretty brave effort. Fred is one of those men who never managed to get their life together and when Ginger left him in the sixties he simply fell apart. This is their reunion and they are to dance on a ghastly voyeuristic television show. Ginger has quite a job keeping him in her sights. We first of all see the characters that are to appear in the TV shows. They all have something odd about them, which is why they are in the three hour long programme. Neither Masina nor Mastroanni are hoofers but with a tap soundtrack and cut away shots we do manage to get an impression of people dancing. This is not a masterpiece but great curiosity value. Sadly - no extras. I would have liked something from Fellini. or either of the protagonists - but sadly they are all deceased. Despite that it is certainly worth seeing.

I rented this film because I had seen the leads Marcello Mastroianni and Giulietta Masina in others films and had really liked their work. This film is a curiosity but the leads work well together and the best bits of the film is where Ginger and Fred are allowed to reminise. Don't rent this expecting a lot of dancing a la Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers because you will end up disappointed.
