Ginger Snaps Unleashed

While attempting to learn more about her dead sister's lycanthropy by mixing her own blood with the affected blood of her sibling, goth-styled teenager Ginger (Emily Perkins) becomes affected by the werewolf curse herself. As the "disease" begins to take over her body, she requires increasingly stronger dosages of wolfsbane to combat it. But after a run-in with another wolf-creature, her beaten body is found---and taken to a drug rehab clinic. Unfortunately for the doctors and patients there, she has no access to her wolfsbane. Perkins and Katherine Isabelle reprise the roles they originated in the smart, creepy 2001 Canadian film, GINGER SNAPS.

    Very different sequel

I saw Ginger Snaps on Sky not so long ago, and thought it was a very unusual, entertaining twist to the Werewolf genre. As soon as I saw there was a sequel (Ginger Snaps unleashed), I bought it.

It is very different to the original film in a number of ways, particularly with the atmosphere created by the lighting - it is mostly shot in darkish settings or at night.

I was initially disappointed that the film wasn't 'more of the same' but about half way through I realised it was actually a better movie than the original. The comic teen-angst elements were missing, but a much more grown up, suspenseful and almost intricate story made for a more compelling movie.

It is not five star material (and some may not like it at all) but it is definitely worth a watch. I may be over rating it a shade at 4 stars, but it is so different you are likely to really enjoy it or just reject it as rubbish - if I were to put 3 stars to it then that would suggest it is just another average-to-good movie, and it is definitely not that, even if you hate it. I would say watching the first movie before this one is a must, on balance, even though this one is very different (and actually better). I doubt that it would make enough sense on its own - in particular you need to see the first movie to properly sympathise with the main character in this sequel.

All in all I would say that you should definitely watch this movie, if only to make your own mind up.

    Less Ginger. Less spice.

The original Ginger snaps was an unexpected gem. A sparkling script, great performances by the entire cast and a very twisted take on growing pains which was gory, twisted and a whole lot of fun. Hearing that not only a sequel was on its way but also a prequel set some time before the original, I was more than a little intrigued to see just exactly where they were going to take the series. And here we are, Ginger snaps unleashed.

The good news is, not a lot has changed. The script is often funny, the performances are very good and it's all still pretty damn twisted in its approach, just check out the final twist in the tale to see what I mean.

Sadly it feels a little bit forced, Ginger only appears in fantasy sequences which do little to develop the story, far more interesting is her sisters relationship with Ghost, a newcomer to the series which is a very welcome one.

The werewolf effects are still pretty awful, but then, show me a film where they actually got that part right! Thankfully the film makers are bright enough to keep their monstrosity out of shot for the majority of the movie.

Ginger snaps unleashed was never going to be as enjoyable as the original but it does have a bloody good try and I for one am looking forward to its prequel due out next year. With a little more Ginger to spice things up!
