In this highly sophisticated and disturbing Canadian horror movie, director John Fawcett transcends the banality of the werewolf formula with verve, well-paced action and genuine terror. When teenager Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) is attacked by the legendary “Beast of Bailey Downs”, she goes from being a death-obsessed Goth freak to a sexually charged dominatrix. Too terrified to confide in their flaky, home-loving mother (Mimi Rogers on fine form) and not wanting to go to the police when Ginger's lust turns murderously savage, her younger sister, Brigitte (Emily Perkins), approaches an enigmatic drug dealer (Kris Lemche) for a cure. Fawcett expertly puts the werewolf myth into the tortured adolescence melting pot and keeps the blood spilling, the suspense high and the humour engaging as this wonderfully crafted chiller hurtles towards a sustained, lyrical and powerfully bleak climax.

Engaging, feminist addition to an overworked genre, though it does not escape from the obligatory overkill of contemporary horror.

Pretty scary
As someone who watches a lot of horror, I really can't quite figure why this one was scary. I caught the first 30 mins when it was shown on TV and felt compelled to track it down to watch the whole movie. So obviously I thought it was good.
My 16 year old daughter loves horror movies, CSI, all things blood and guts (not quite as bad as the two girls' characters in this film!). However, she did not thank me for letting her watch this. She couldn't sleep for hours after watching it and still didn't want to be reminded the next day. Extra fun for me ribbing her about it then;-)
I can certainly see some will watch it and find it low-budget American junk. Well, let's face it, isn't most horror.
In many ways I would liken this to American Warewolf in London, which I also thought was a combination of some scarey bits but a whole lot of tongue-in-cheek humour.
Rent it, enjoy it, but don't expect a screen classic, just a good horror movie. Make your kids watch it, and wait for Soicial Services to come knocking... (joke!) -

Class! Dark humour, really enjoyable film - made us laugh out loud, brilliant!
Tale about two 'goth' teenage girls going through changes at high school-lots of changes. Great horror with loads of funny moments... -
